Rooftop Bars are simply amazing.

Located on a top floor of a building these bars give you a view of the city, the beach or other intriguing architecture in the area.

Generally these bar/restaurants are trendy attended by the young and beautiful and often the food they serve is avant-garde or fashionable.

They can boast a unique view, a live band, discounted appetizers or even 2-for-1 drinks during Happy Hour.

One thing for certain - they are not your conventional bar.

Below we share some photos and stories of Rooftop Bars from around the world.

COLUMBIA

Looking down into Alquimico's first and second floors, Cartagena, Colombia Alquimico Rooftop Bar - Cartagena, Colombia

While we are walking around the Walled City of Cartagena, we come across this very interesting window with Alquimico written on it. Alquimico in Spanish means the Alchemist so it stirred some curiosity. Since we were making the rounds of Rooftop Bars, we put this one on the list.

One of the things we really enjoy when we go to a city, is to check out their rooftop bars and restaurants. It's a great way to spend happy hour and share some appetizers or a meal. Cartagena was no different. The first place recommended to us was Cafe del Mar. Dubbed as the best place in town to watch the sunset, we went there on our 2nd night in town. Yowza.

Customers at Hotel Movich Rooftop enjoying the sunset Hotel Movich Cartagena de Indias - Cartagena, Colombia

We were on the hunt for Rooftop Bars. We discovered Hotel Movich and its rooftop bar online. Let me tell you, these places are great fun. Engaging music sometimes with a live DJ, open air views of the Colonial City below, delicious appetizers and full plates, famous mixed drinks, and these rooftop bars are beautiful places to socialize. Hotel Movich was one of our favorite places.

Gorgeous waitress KGB Russian Bar, Cartagena, Colombia The KGB Bar - Cartagena, Colombia

This might not have been our first pick, but a friend of ours recommended that we visit The KGB Bar in Cartagena. What is a Russian Bar doing in a Colonial City like Cartagena? Good question. So... we had to find out for ourselves.

Al Quimico Rooftop Bar and mural, Cartagena, Colombia La Jugada, Rooftop Bar - Cartagena, Colombia

We continued our journey through the Colonial City of Cartagena, Colombia for fun and lively rooftop bars. We discovered this one because we sat at Al Quimico a few nights before, and had noticed the flamingo statues on the roof! Thought we might check it out.

The clock tower, Torres del Reloj, Cartagena, Colombia Mirador Gastro Rooftop Bar - at Hotel Torres del Reloj, Cartagena, Colombia

In the evenings, we tried to find enticing rooftop bars. They'd each have a view, a delectable menu (we'd share appetizers) and then we'd walk around the walled city at night. It was then that we'd imagine what it must have been like in this vibrant city; life with horse drawn carriages, ladies with long dresses, pirates, and human traffickers. This night, we chose to go to Mirador Gastro Bar, located on the rooftop of Hotel Torres del Reloj, by the clock tower and the Plaza de las Coches.

Mirador Gastro Bar, Cartagena, Colombia Best Roof Top Bars in Cartagena, Colombia

We loved our visit to Cartagena, Colombia. Such a colorful, Caribbean city, with international cuisine, Palenqueras, great food and a Colonial past. Spending time in the tropics, sipping on a Caribbean Rum or pina colada, looking out to sea, one of the things we enjoyed the most was the selections of rooftop bars. Some charged a cover fee (can be $50USD!) or required a certain amount of spending if you were to enter. However, below are rooftop bars that were free to get in. Several offered live DJs for wicked music, and some had amazing food. Take a look!

ITALY

Al Terzo Rooftop Bar packed with customers, Anzio, Italy Al Terzo Rooftop Bar - Anzio, Italy

Across the street from our hotel in the quaint town of Anzio, Italy was a Rooftop Bar which offered a prized view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Roman Emperor Nero had a villa here centuries ago, and this rooftop bar was placed right at the beach that carries his name.

MEXICO

Hector Lavoe, Cafe Lavoe, Oaxaca, Mexico Cafe Lavoe - Oaxaca, Mexico

Lately, we have been making it a point to visit rooftop restaurants and bars, and what FUN that is! By happenstance, we came upon Cafe Lavoe... Hey, who IS this guy, anyway? Hector Lavoe was a Puerto Rican salsa singer, considered to possibly be the best and most important singer in the history of salsa music. He was famous from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Attico 303, Puebla, Mexico Attico Rooftop Bar, Puebla, Mexico

Billy and I are foodies. One of our goals in visiting Puebla, Mexico, was to go to rooftop bars and restaurants, enjoy their view and taste their offerings. Many rooftop bars and restaurants have unique, avant-garde cuisine and an excellent view.

Roof Top Restaurant in Patzcuaro with View of the Lake!

Hotel Posada La Basilica in Patzcuaro is set in an 18th century house with a view of Lake Patzcuaro. One afternoon we stopped by to cool off and took in the sights. See this ancient town's tiled rooftops and Billy zooms into the Lakeview.

Roof Top Bar at Hotel Los Juaninos, Morelia, Mexico

GORGEOUS view of the Cathedral from the rooftop bar at Hotel Los Juaninos. Also a view of the boulevard below. Having a little glass of wine on top of the world!

Happy Hour at Soledad Hotel in Morelia, Mexico

Enjoy this beautiful garden setting of the Soledad Hotel in the Historico Centro of Morelia, Mexico. Listen to the many birds chirping in the tropical trees lighted up with dancing white lights. If you get to Morelia, this is a must-stop for Happy Hour!

Morelia Rooftop Bars Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico

Morelia is a beautiful Colonial City in Central Mexico. Gorgeous architecture, international restaurants, a clean environment and lovely weather all make this city a must-see. While visiting there, we discovered a few rooftop bars, cafes and restaurants. It's a terrific way to view the bustling city below. Come take a look!

PANAMA

The bar with a terrific mural on the wall Tantalo Restaurant, Hotel and Rooftop Bar - Casco Viejo, Panama City Panama

After walking around town a bit, it began to be close to lunch time. Our selections were numerous, so we didn't know where to go. This one place had a Trip Advisor sticker on the front door, advertising the fact that it won an award of excellence in 2014 so we thought we would take our chances. The name of the restaurant was Tantalo.

Alquimico Rooftop Bar - Cartagena, Colombia

Here we are at another rooftop bar in Cartagena, Colombia. This one was a little cozier without much of a view, but fun, nonetheless.
