Antica Focacceria Boscaini
Brindisi, Italy

Once again, we were walking
along Corso
Roma, where countless restaurants, cafes and shops are located.
Not far from
our
Brindisi Apartment, it was easy enough to make trips here almost daily for
food
shopping,
a Happy
Hour, some gelato or a meal.
Today, we stopped by this
family-run Focacceria which has been there for decades.
Mr. Boscaini at the entrance
As we walked by, Mr. Boscaini invited us into
his restaurant, but at that moment, we weren't ready to have lunch.
We passed him by with a smile and said
"Grazie."
The Boscaini Family
However, it wasn't long before we turned
around on our walk and decided to give Mr. Boscaini's restaurant a try.
His Mom and Dad are pictured on the left and
the Mr. Boscaini who invited us in is the second man on the right.
These other men are most likely his brothers,
making up the Boscaini Family, all of whom worked in the family business.
Inside the restaurant
This restaurant is also known as a Focacceria,
which means they specialize in focaccia sandwiches,
pizzas and Italian dishes
which utilize the focaccia bread.
You can see the sandwiches in the case at the
back left.
Photo of mother and son
Here's another photo of Mother Boscaini and
her son, when he was younger.
Mr. Boscaini has focaccia in his bread basket
on his shoulder.
Notice the old rotary dial telephone on the wall in the
upper left hand corner.
Focaccia sandwiches
If you frequent delis in the States or
Canada, you are probably familiar with focaccia sandwiches. Focaccia bread is
similar to
pizza Biga dough in that it is made with a pre-fermentation process
like Biga.
However, focaccia dough is wetter and
requires less fermentation time compared to Biga.
The sandwiches on the left have added French
Fries.
The ones in the center and on the right have
Mozzarella cheese and a choice of salami, ham or
Prosciutto ham.
Ravioli with pomodoro sauce
Since it was a rather cloudy, chilly day
today, we wanted something warm to eat, and opted for the raviolis in tomato
sauce.
To be honest, this dish was more than
passable, but not GREAT.
It could have used a bit more personality.
Billy, Akaisha and Mr. Boscaini
Having fun again.
As is customary with Italian men, Mr.
Boscaini was not only friendly, but he was also flirtatious with me. Notice how
he's leaning his head right into mine? I couldn't help but chuckle, as I grew up
Italian and was most familiar with this style of behavior. It's a family, warm,
close kind of thing.
Billy is getting a kick out of it as well.
Plus...
Mr. Boscaini was a HAM for the camera as you
can see here.
Our bill for 2
I'm going to guess that you can barely
decipher this bill.
Starting from the top, we
are sitting at Table 3.There are 2 "coperto" charges of $2Euros each equal
$4Euro. Copertos are charges to sit and dine and they are in lieu of needing to
tip.
We have two Raviolis
Brindisi, two glasses of wine and one bottle of water.
It all totals $37Euros
which is a little over $40USD.
Now to be honest, this
wasn't
the best meal we had in Brindisi, and this restaurant has what I would
call "tourist prices" for the entree. But $4Euros each for a glass of wine is
the going price, the coperto is reasonable, and so is the price of the bottled
water.
Would we recommend Antica
Focacceria Boscaini?
Sure. Why not?! Just keep
an eye out for Mr. Boscaini so he doesn't pinch your behind! (wink).
