As you know, a continuous
thread throughout our travels is that
we pursue creative
cuisine.
We are spending time in
Brindisi, another
seaport
town in southern Italy - which means fresh seafood for
the tasting!
Not far from
our
apartment,
we saw this fine dining establishment which also seemed to be very locally
popular.
Our meal was so good the
first time, that we ate there again later.
Take a look.
Menu cover
Not everyone understands how much the mind is
related to enjoying a meal.
Billy has always said "The eyes are the first
to feast" and that is why presentation is so important.
Food is not to be "slopped" on a plate, but
rather arranged artistically, so that the mind is engaged as well.
Open air seating
When we can, we like to eat out-of-doors.
Brindisi has its share of
patio-style cafes and
restaurants, something it seems Europe specializes in.
Plus there is something attractive about
seeing people enjoying their meal out in the sunshine with fresh air about.
So, naturally, we chose an outside table.
Indoor seating
However, for those days when the weather is
rainy or cold, IL Trullo offers indoor seating as well.
The wall paintings are scenes from the local area.
Menu in English
Take a look at these delicious and creative
offerings.
I recognized most everything on the menu -
from both sea and land - but what in the world is grilled macaroni?
And you'll notice on the left under The
Classics, that this restaurant offers Spicy Spaghetti "all'assassina".
Assassina is the Italian word for assassin or
murderer, so you can imagine what a kick that spaghetti has!
Must be far and away more spicy than
Arrabiatta - which merely translates as "angry."
These Italians have a sense of humor!
Pizza menu
IL Trullo offers
pizzas
cooked on a stone in
a wood burning stove.
This is the best way to cook pizza for even
heating and to get the biga dough to rise and bubble.
And of course they make their own focaccia
bread.
While IL Trullo offered pizzas beginning at
lunch, most pizzerias in Italy don't open to sell their pies until 7pm.
Mussels gratinee
I can't tell you how delicious these were.
The cheese and breadcrumb topping was
absolutely perfect, and the mussels were not over cooked.
Truly a delicacy!
Steak au poivre
On our first visit, Billy and I shared the
mussels and this magnificent steak with green peppercorns.
It was obvious that the chef knew what he was
doing as this dish was also flawless.
IL Trullo has an agreement with the best
butchers in town to supply them with the choicest meats.
This dish proved it.
Our bill
This is our bill on our first visit. Totaling
$46.50 Euros, our meal came to a little over $51USD.
The beef filet was $20USD, the mussels were
$13USD and you'll notice the $2Euro "Coperto" cover charge per person in lieu of
tipping.
For the lunch we received, this was more than
fair.
Billy and Akaisha toasting to YOU!
Everything was simply so tasty, that we had
to return.
Still choosing a table outside, we ordered
and anticipated the enticing meal to come.
Mussels au gratin
Yes, yes, these mussels were so enjoyable
that on our return visit we had to have them again.
We were not disappointed!
Grilled octopus on mashed potatoes with olive oil
This time we wanted something from the sea so
we chose the grilled octopus on a bed of fresh mashed potatoes.
Being Italy, of course there were basil
leaves and olive oil drizzle.
Superb!
Panna cotta with raspberry drizzle
After we shared the appetizer and the main
course, we decided to go for the house dessert, which was a panna cotta with a
raspberry syrup topping.
The creamy cheese filling against the
tart/sweet of the raspberry sauce was addicting.
These Italians really know how to make their
desserts!
Our bill for 2
This time, we had a bottle of chardonnay from
Pugia and dessert, so our total came to $57Euros. This is about $63USD.
Each time we had visited, the locals flocked
to this restaurant as well.
Certainly if you are in Brindisi, make a stop
here and enjoy a dessert and coffee, a pizza or a full meal.
You won't regret it!
Would we recommend this restaurant?
Absolutely!
