Happy Hour is the time of
day where one kicks back with friends and loved ones.
A glass of wine or other
favorite drink, a few delicious snacks, and great discussions, it's an event we
look forward to.
Join us in an Italian Happy
Hour in Brindisi, Italy.
Peanuts, green olives, Taralli, and white
wine
Although not every restaurant or cafe that
offers a happy hour gives these snacks along with your drink, in our experience,
most did.
Here you see peanuts,
green olives and Taralli.
Taralli are a classic Italian snack food,
particularly popular in the southern half of the country.
They are like savory breadsticks, rolled into
rings and they have a crunchy texture like pretzels. With flavors like onion, garlic, sesame
seeds, poppy seeds, fennel, pepper, chili, or just a simple touch of salt, it's
no wonder they are a favorite of the locals.
Billy and Akaisha at the Snack Bar
The Snack Bar is also a place where we
frequented for morning cappuccinos and croissants.
Favored for a morning coffee, it's also
trendy to go there later in the day for a glass of wine.
It wasn't far from
our
apartment and a grocery store, a little piazza and a fountain were also
nearby.
Business men having a discussion
We were enjoying our afternoon break when
these men wearing blazers and ties met together for a chat.
They became very animated in their
conversation together.
I snapped this photo as the nun passed by
because I thought it made for an interesting juxtaposition.
There is a fountain through the clearing
behind these men, and a variety of stores, shops and the grocery I mentioned
around the little piazza.
Here's the Anchor Fountain
This is the fountain I have mentioned. It's
just a few steps away from the Snack Bar.
Brindisi has a very long history of being
sought out for its deep water harbor.
The Romans used the
Brindisi port at the end of their Appian Way to ship goods to Greece and
other areas across the sea.
This same port played a big role in World War
II, and in general, men who love the sea have always been in the fabric of this
beautiful town.
So, a fountain in the shape of an anchor is
justly fitting.
Another day, different appetizers
Today, along with the Taralli, peanuts and
olive variety, we were given
Prosciutto sandwiches made on a croissant.
These treats were included in the price of
the wine, which runs $4Euros a glass.
No need for dinner with finger food like these!
Again, another day, different snacks
Remember,
bread,
pastries, and pizzas are big in Italy.
No proper meal (or snack!) should be without
some kind of dough offering.
Here we have fresh
mini-pizzas, tomato and salami "sliders" and a bowl of olives.
So popular is this place that they ran out of
white wine!
I chose a soft Rose, and Billy drank a Merlot
instead.
Our bill for 4 glasses of wine
We are seated at Table #27 as marked on our
bill. Our wines are
$4Euros each. The cover charge (in lieu of tipping) is $0.50Euros per person.
For 4 glasses of wine, tipping, and
all of this food, the total came to $17Euros or just under $19USD.
Such a deal, eh?
Beautiful weather, people-watching, and
sitting out-of-doors enjoying life for almost a pittance!
Italy is amazing.
