Terrazza Calaviere Rooftop Bar

Matera, Italy

This rooftop bar is a must-see.

Food and drinks are simple, but it's the view that will knock your socks off.

If you are going to see The Sassi or visit Matera, visit this place. It will give you a memory you will never forget.

These cliff side seats are the coveted ones.

When we arrived for an early happy hour, there were no seats left.

My suggestion is to go for a late lunch and then move over to the bar seats when they become available. Watch the sunset over The Sassi and let the magic begin.

The view from the bar

So here I am in a sweater and a vest and everyone else pretty much is in short sleeves.

The wind coming out of The Sassi and down the streets of Matera can be bold, and I guess I was expecting a storm!

No one else had a care in the world...

Here you see the various tables in this cozy bar, the cliff side seats and the fabulous view down the gorge.

Romance is in the air

Take your best date or your best people and come here for the experience and the view.

We have been to numerous rooftop bars in our travels, and each one offers something worthwhile. But none of them in our experience (except for maybe Cafe del Mar in Cartagena, Colombia) offers this kind of view.

Take advantage of it.

Why not?

The mysterious Sassi

We have already told you the story of The Sassi and how there has been a continuous population living here since the Old Stone Age.

Then the Italian government came in, relocated the people, and decades later cleaned out the area and updated it.

Now it has running water, electricity and is a ragingly popular tourist site.

So why not be a tourist and sit here at the bar and dream?

Some call The Sassi "Bethlemen 2" because the buildings look very similar to places in Jerusalem centuries ago.

That's why lots of period-piece movies have been filmed here.

Our bill from Rooftop bar Terrazza Calaviere, Matera, Italy

Our bill for the 2 of us

We made a quick happy hour stop here and ordered 2 glasses of wine at $5Euros each.

The "coberto" was $3Euros each, bringing our bill to $16Euros.

The coberto serves as the tip in Italy, so the $16Euros was the total bill.

Would we recommend Terrazza Cavaliere?

Yes!

Just do it.
