Palapa Perea

Veracruz, Mexico

Currency Exchange
There was one more
restaurant on this visit to Veracruz that we wanted to try.
We've already had buffets,
fine cuts
of beef,
specialty coffees, and
Argentine lasagna and - being at the ocean - it was time to have some
seafood.
And Palapa Parea serves
seafood.

Inside Palapa Parea
This restaurant is an unassuming place and
not touristy.
It's where the locals and Jarochos eat. Some reviews on
the various review sites are proud to mention that there are no Norte Americanos.
But... that didn't stop us!
We walked from
our hotel
and got there right before the lunch crowd came in.
Lucky us!

Menu
Well, let me explain.
Lots of Norte Americanos eat lunch around
noon to 1:30pm.
Latins begin their comida at 2 pm.
If we want to beat the crowd at any Latin
restaurant location, we just go before 2pm.
Easy peasy!
As you can see from this menu, Palapa Parea
serves various salads, paella, salmon, shrimp, snails, whole local fish and
filets.

Whole fish Veracruz style
Since we are in
Veracruz,
we both wanted to taste the original
Veracruz
style of sauce.
We have had fish in this popular preparation
elsewhere in Mexico and haven't been that impressed.
Here was the place to find out what we were
missing.

Filet of fish Veracruz style
While Billy ordered a whole fish, I went for
the fish filet.
We both enjoyed our choices, and I must say
this was the BEST Veracruz style of sauce I have ever had.
Now I know what it's supposed to taste like.
My Robalo fish was served in a rich fish
broth with peppers, tomatoes, onions, green olives and capers. There were some
kind of herbs too, but I'm unclear which ones were put in.
But it was perfect.

Our bill for 2 people
Service was very good, and the waiter was
patient in explaining all the menu options.
We saw a family come in as we were eating our
meal, and they needed extra attention - tables moved together, a high chair,
specialty drinks and more.
The waiter zipped and zoomed around with a
smile, and without forgetting us.
Our bill for two came to 672Pesos or about
$34USD before tip.
Would we return?
Absolutely!
