Hernán Cortés founded La Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz (“The Rich Town of the True Cross”) in 1519, but due to serious fresh water and flooding problems it was twice relocated. Veracruz has occupied its present site since 1599.

Due to its strategic trading port location, Veracruz has been pillaged, plundered and attacked by various pirates, countries and military over the centuries.

Offering colonial-era buildings, regional cuisine, sport fishing, beaches, and water sports, it is an international tourist destination today.

Learn more about Veracruz below.
