Hernán Cortés founded La
Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz (“The Rich Town of the True Cross”) in 1519, but due
to serious fresh water and flooding problems it was twice relocated. Veracruz
has occupied its present site since 1599.
Due to its strategic
trading port location, Veracruz has been pillaged, plundered and attacked by
various pirates, countries and military over the centuries.
Offering colonial-era
buildings, regional cuisine, sport fishing, beaches, and water sports, it is an
international tourist destination today.

The Port of
Veracruz
It was very
impressive to see the massive organization it took for these ships to
call ahead, get clearance, have a tug ready, be sure the weather
conditions were right, and have the dock workers ready to load or
unload. Honestly, it made one proud to watch this professionalism every
day. |

The
Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Veracruz, Mexico
Our hotel was beautiful and it had terrific
views of the active international port. We had no idea how wonderful this view
would be and how much we would learn about the ships coming from and going into
the harbor. |

The Aquarium Acuario de Veracruz Veracruz, Mexico
We took a nice but
windy walk to the Aquarium, and when we arrived, there were people
spilling out onto the street and in line to buy tickets. We must have
come right at the perfect family time because there were kids, strollers
and Moms and Dads everywhere.

The
San Juan de Ulúa Fort Veracruz, Mexico
We had heard about
this renowned historical fort which played major roles in both the
beginning and closing stages of Spanish rule in Mexico. Built in the
1500s by Hernan Cortez to deter pirate attacks, we just had to see it.

We've already had
buffets, fine cuts of beef, specialty coffees, and Argentine lasagna and
- being at the ocean - it was time to have some seafood. And Palapa
