Just an hour out of
Palermo
by train, is
Sicily's best beach, the town of
Cefalu.
Cefalu
boasts a dramatic backdrop with the Rocca di Cefalu towering over the long
crescent beach, and the crystal-clear turquoise waters and golden sands create a
picture-perfect scene.
We had to go.

The sign for Ragno D'Oro
Wandering along this internationally favored
beach, we discovered a restaurant with an interesting menu.

Sidewalk sandwich menu board
What caught our eye was the Baccala alla
Messinese. We hadn't had Baccalla or Bacalhau - a salt cod dish - since we visited
Portugal in 1979.
Yeah. That was a long time ago, but the cod
was so tasty and remarkable, we still remember it today!
So, we had to give this one a try.

Our waiter pouring wine
We plopped ourselves down, ordered a bottle
of wine and some Bacalhau.
Bacalhau is Portugal's signature dish going
back centuries, but here we are in Sicily. We wondered how Messinese would
taste.
Our waiter is pouring our wine and with the
Madonie Mountains in the background.
It's a beautiful scene and perfect for lunch!
As Jimmy Buffett sang: "I wish lunch could
last forever."
This has been a motto of ours
all over the world.

Billy and Akaisha at the table
We are enjoying the scenery and the
anticipation of having the famous salt cod again so much, that we WhatsApp our
friend who is back in
Palermo.
"Come join us!" we say. It's only an
hour away by train and you'll love it. International beach beauties, hiking,
good restaurants and lots of sun. You'll find us on the main walking street."
Meanwhile, we "cheer" each other with our
lovely wine, while waiting for our friend to arrive.

Bacalhau Messinese style
There is no one way to prepare salt cod.
While in Portugal, we had the amazing cod,
"punched" potatoes roasted in the oven and fresh green beans. THE best olive oil
was then drizzled over the full meal and it was like heaven just eating it.
Being in Sicily, we expected tomatoes, capers
and green
olives - which is what you are seeing here. Olive oil is in the sauce and
truly, this rendition was delicious as well.

Simple pizza
By now our friend had arrived from Palermo,
and found us at the sidewalk table of the main walking street.
We convinced him to sit down and order
something, and he did.
A
Margherita pizza soon arrived, as you can see here.
Notice the double-yeasted
Biga dough
crust, something Italians have
perfected.

Bill for 3 people
In Italy, in lieu of a tip, we are charged a
coperto ($4Euro) and our bill for the 3 of us came to $57.50 Euros.
This comes to about $62USD.
With such good food, and a spectacular sea
view, this amount was a pittance.
Would we recommend Ragno'D'oro in Cefalu
for you?
Absolutely!
