Pizza and Pasta

Catania, Sicily

Eating pizza in Italy is not similar to the experience of eating pizza in the US.

It is nowhere close.

Not far from our apartment in Catania, and on one of our well-traveled paths to the historical section of the city is this Pizza and Pasta place.

Simple and offering only outdoor seating, we thought to give it a try.

As with many pizzerias, Pizza and Pasta opens at 7pm.

As the evening wears on, it becomes crowded and we have seen this restaurant bring out additional tables and chairs to accommodate patrons.

With affordable pricing including a carafe of wine for $5Euros, this has become a popular place to eat.

Pizza menu

As I mentioned previously, pizzas are unique in Italy. Where else could you purchase a Prosciutto pizza, Salmon or a seafood pizza? Or even a fresh tuna (popular in the Mediterranean) pizza?

With a specially-made 24-36 hour, easily digested yeasted dough, the experience is memorable to be sure.

The pistachios grown in Sicily are famous. The perfect climate plus the rich volcanic soil make for a very profitable and popular international export.

From this menu you can choose a pizza with cream of pistachio on it.

I'll bet in most cities of the US that would be a difficult find.

These pastas are a great choice also.

Take the Rigatoni fantasy for instance. You'll get little stovepipe pasta which holds the sauce in the middle of the tube, along with sausage, mushrooms, cream and grated cheese.

Or perhaps you'll try seafood spaghetti or penne with fresh salmon, cream, onion and grated cheese.

Add to that a carafe of wine for $5Euros, or a large mug of beer for $2.50Euros and you are all set.

Throughout Sicily and southern Italy, one can purchase delicious table wine for $2-$3Euros per liter.

This makes it affordable even at restaurants.

San Martino Pizza at Pasta and Pizza, Catania, Sicily

San Martino Pizza

We opted for the San Martino Pizza which had mozzarella, Milano salame, fresh mushrooms, onions, olives, cherry tomatoes and olive oil.

Notice the crust is high on the edges with the characteristic dark bubbles showing the yeasted dough being browned by the wood oven.

Our bill for 3 people

Our bill for 3 people came to $21Euros, just over $23USD.

Cover charge is $2Euro per person, and we had 1 pizza, 1 pasta, 2 bottles of water and a jug of wine.

Not bad, huh?

Would we recommend eating at Pizza and Pasta?

Yes!
