Mooddika Restaurant

As you know, we are FOODIES and like to try out different restaurants.

Today, we wandered around the Historical section of Catania, and just a few stone throws from the University of Catania, is Mooddika Restaurant.

It was a lovely day, and there were outside tables on a quiet alleyway, so we decided to give it a try.

Outdoor seating

As you can see, there is a garden-like feel even with these outdoor tables on the street, so we wandered down and grabbed a table.

Perhaps you know from where you live, that these QR codes are "the thing" now.

Woe to the elderly grandma or pa who wants to see the hard copy menu. They'll have to ask their own children or grandchildren to show them the menu on their cell phone.

While this is the modern way of finding out what a restaurant offers, we find it a bit restricting.

Maybe you want to go straight to the "glass of wine" section or skip the seafood section because you are allergic.

Navigating options can be challenging, not to mention that the print is small. If you enlarge the print, you will be scrolling side-to-side to read the menu items.

Waaaah! But that's progress for ya!

On the other hand, the restaurant doesn't incur any printing expenses, they can update the selections at the click of a key, they don't lose menus to customers taking them, and it's supposedly the "cleaner" presentation. No nasty human fingerprints have touched the digital version online, so we all supposedly stay healthier.

Am I showing my age?

Give me a large menu that I hold in both my hands and let me discuss the entree or appetizer options with my companions at the table.

Don't make me dizzy going cross-eyed flipping through the digital pages, or lose my place and now I can't find the salad section.

Older couple near University of Catania, Mooddika Restaurant, Catania, Sicily

Right behind us is the University of Catania, which is about 500 years old. Earlier in the week there was a troop inspection and the raising of the Italian flag presentation. Further to the right of this large square is a very upscale street with expensive clothing shops and famous restaurants.

Speaking of which, Mooddika has a Certificate of Excellence, and is rated in the top 200 restaurants out of 1,700 surveyed.

I probably shouldn't tell you - those of a delicate nature - but horse is an historical dish here in Sicily, and actually in much of Europe as well.

We tried ordering the horse meatballs, but... as they are a favorite - they were sold out.

Not only that, but he chef had just walked out this morning, leaving Mooddika in a lurch!

Aaahhhh yes.

Fond memories of our Restaurant Days in Santa Cruz, California

This photo gives you a closer view of the Baroque style architecture of the University.

There are benches for sitting so you can take a load off your feet and people-watch for a while.

The grey building on the left is made of lava stone from Mt. Etna eruptions.

Pork and gravy, pasta with meat sauce at Mooddika Restaurant, Catania, Sicily

Tenderloin of pork and pasta with Sicilian ragout

So what were we going to order, since the chef walked out?

I thought of trying this fettuccini pasta with Sicilian ragout. It has a cream sauce topping.

Notice the colorful plate with the simulation of Roman tile.

Tenderloin of Pork with roasted potatoes

Billy ordered this tenderloin of pork on a bed of arugula with roasted potatoes.

This was very tender and juicy, and he was quite pleased!

Another colorful plate presentation.

Our bill for two

Our bill came to $50Euros, about $56USD.

You will notice the coperto charge of $2Euros each, replacing the tipping custom in Italy.

We had a carafe of white wine for $15 Euros and a bottle of natural water for $3Euros.

Would we recommend Mooddika Restaurant?

Yes!
