We are staying in a lovely hotel in Anzio, Italy.

For $1.10Euro each we took a 4-minute train ride to the town of Nettuno to see The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial here.

The Memorial is pretty sobering, and worth visiting. Entrance is free.

From there we headed to the sea to find a place for lunch.

After wandering around the harbor for a while and looking at various menus, we decided upon Salsedine.

There were already people seated outside, which was a good sign that it was popular, so we went in.

They offered sautéed clams, mussels, tartar of tuna, oysters, pasta, fried calamari, grilled fish and more.

It all looked great so we were anticipating a terrific meal.

The interior of the restaurant

It was cooler inside and we found a table and sat down. Service was a bit slow in the beginning, and we simply assumed they were busy with the several tables out on the terrazza.

But eventually, we received menus.

Menu

At the top of this menu there is an antipasti with 10 items, but I couldn't figure out what the numbers underneath were about.

There were sautéed mussels and clams, and then there was the raw seafood menu - which was tempting.

The Tartar of tuna, swordfish and pink shrimp held appeal...

Raw oysters were $3Euros each. The Oysters Gillardau (at $6Euros each) are considered to be the "Rolls Royce" of oysters, farmed by the Gillardau family just outside a town called La Rochelle in France.

We know this town, well as we stayed there during our visit to France and Billy worked in a restaurant on Isle de Re in 1979. This area is considered to be the "Oyster capital of the world."

Another menu

Fried calamari - when done correctly - is such a delicacy and is one of Billy's favorite meals to eat seaside.

Salsadine offers fried calamari alone or with shrimp.

We chose just the calamari, a side salad, sautéed clams and a bottle of Pecorino wine.

Pecorino is a white wine considered to be between a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc. It goes perfectly with seafood.

Things are rolling now and we are looking forward to our seafood meal here in Nettuno, Italy.

Cheering to our health and to the fantastic opportunity that we are able to be here in Italy, we began our meal.

Fried Calamari

This fried calamari was simply the best.

Light breading, not greasy at all, crunchy on the outside and very fresh.

The lemons in this area of Italy are known for their sweetness, and it made a tasty compliment to the breading of the calamari.

The sautéed clams were marvelous also and with the Sorrento Lemon, it was delish.

Dunking the fresh bread into the broth, both of us were pleased with our meal overall.

our bill for 2 at Salsedine Restaurant, Nettuno, Italy

Our bill for lunch

That is, until we received our bill.

We had ordered calamari solo - no shrimp - but were charged for shrimp (a $6Euro difference). And our bottle of Pecorino wine was listed as $16Euros and we were charged $18.

What could have happened?

Having been in the restaurant business ourselves, we are loathe to complain about the food and pricing when we eat out. It's a hard business in general, and there's a lot of stress to manage.

We had been overcharged $8Euros on a simple meal, and we just wanted to know what was going on.

As we approached the cash register, we mentioned our questions - why were we charged for shrimp we didn't receive, and what was up with the wine price?

It was all very amicable, yet the wife of the chef started back-peddling and it became uncomfortable.

Were we charged more because we were tourists (and possibly wouldn't notice)? Did the wife not like Americans? Or was it something else all together?

We just didn't know.

Eventually, they gave us a "value discount" of $1Euro, and we left confused.

Would we recommend Salsedine Restaurant?

That's a good question.

Food was excellent, and the location was lovely. This overcharge could have been a one-off, but, if you go, check out the bill and be sure you are charged correctly.
