Complimentary Breakfast
from Our Hotel in Naples, Italy

It didn't help that we
arrived in Naples and it was cold and drizzling. And it didn't help that we had
been spoiled by our 2 previous lodgings -
one in
Anzio and the other
in Gaeta.
Both were quaint-ish,
historical
towns with humans generally meeting our eyes and returning our
greetings of the day.
No,
our room in
Naples was
small but adequate, and Naples itself was a
HUGE metropolitan city with all the
noise, traffic and trash that these cities entail.
- BUT -
We did get a
complimentary breakfast with the price of our room, and after all the years of
our travels, we have found that this can be quite a benefit.
The outside of Barbanera Cafe
Upon arrival, Elvira gave us coupons to use
at the coffee shop downstairs and a few doors from our room.
We could use them any time of the day for an
espresso, cappuccino, tea and a pastry.
While not exactly the buffet breakfast we had
in Anzio, it was suitable and we were grateful.
Inside Cafe Barbanera
When we walked in to use our coupons,
Barbanera was very animated.
Apparently, this is a very popular cafe with
fresh pastries right out of the oven.
People on their way to work, motorcyclists
buzzing by, old men arriving for their morning cup - all popped in to get their
pastry and caffeine fix.
It took us a couple of days to "break into
the crowd" and have them recognize us. After all, this was The City.
Outside seating at Barbanera
There was outside seating available as well.
Tables turned over with new customers fairly
rapidly.
It might be full when we arrived, but if we
waited a few moments, seats would open up.
Lemon croissants and cappuccino
While we tried several of their pastry
options, our favorite turned out to be this lemon-creamy-custard-filled
croissant.
Apparently, lemons in this area of Italy are
a big deal.
Sorrento, a day trip from Naples, is famous
for their lemons and the whole town sells "lemon everything;" Lemon custard,
lemon
gelato, lemons painted on tableware, lemons painted on aprons, dresses
made from lemon printed fabric, lemon napkins, even lemoncella, a mildly
alcoholic beverage with that distinctive lemon flavor.
Who knew?
That seaside town was yellow, yellow, yellow!
Chocolate filled pastry and cappuccino
Of course, chocolate is always a good standby
too. No problem with that!
When the favored lemon croissants were no
longer available, we "settled" for the delicious chocolate cream filled ones
instead.
Akaisha and her chocolate croissant
You can see by my wearing a long sleeved
shirt, a scarf and my vest, that it's still been cold and rainy here in Naples.
But no worries, we were accepted and
recognized now in the cafe.
And the morning game was to try and get there before the lemon croissants were sold out.
I didn't make it this particular morning and
enjoyed my chocolate one instead.
Would we recommend Barbanera?
Yes!
