Vuciata Restaurant is
located in the heart of the famous
Catania Fish Market, so it's an excellent
place for people-watching.
In this restaurant, you
will find traditional recipes with an innovative twist.
Run by two pairs of
brothers who are from restaurant and entrepreneurial families, they share a
passion for hospitality and high-quality catering. It is said they were raised
on "bread and business."
This restaurant has received
awards and recognition for its quality and authenticity.
Let's take a look.

Map showing where Vuciata Restaurant is
located
On this map you can see the location of
Vuciata Restaurant as well as
Castello Ursino (which used to be on the sea but
is now landlocked).
Just above Vuciata you will find the
Basilica of Saint Agatha, and to the left
you'll find the
Teatro Antico - the Roman Amphitheater - one of the largest in
the Roman Empire.

The covered outside seating area
The manner in which this seating area is
separated from the passers-by makes it perfect for being involved in the crowd,
but secluded from it.
Vuciata is proud of its food coming from
local areas, certified organic cultivations and
DOC, IGP and Dop. - These
labeled
locations are esteemed designated areas of production and veritably guarantee
the flavor and quality of your food item.
The fish is obtained from the fish market
itself, just a stone's throw away.

The indoor seating area
In the evening, this restaurant fills with
locals having their aperitifs then a meal.
One of the owners - Marco Timpanaro - is obsessed by the quality of
products to be used in his restaurant. This same attention is dedicated to the wine
list, strictly Sicilian and mainly from
Mount Etna’s vineyards.

A placemat at Vuciata Restaurant
This placemat shows the items Sicily is most
famous for and where they are made or found.
Cooking with these items give traditional and genuine flavors that
speak of the countryside and livestock, of home-made preserves, of cunzati bread, pickles,
cured meats and cheeses.
It was in the early 70's when Billy was traveling in
Oaxaca, Mexico that a placemat
similar to this one, had mushrooms pictured. He followed that map to
Huautla, a
mountain town which was famous (the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and other
high-profiled people visited) for their magic mushrooms.

The menu in Italian
This menu offers some delicious starters like
Carpaccio of tuna, a selection of raw tuna, salmon, and a tatare of Shrimp and
scallops.
There are salmon steaks, swordfish, calamari,
and spaghetti with shrimp.

The menu in English
Here you go, the same menu in English.
You can have 2 different Carpaccios marinated
in citrus, a mixed grilled fish plate, and once again...
Horsemeat appears on
the menu!

Billy and Akaisha seated in the outdoor
section
Here we are in the outdoor section, excited
to receive our traditional Sicilian meal.
The famous Fish Market is behind us and to
the left. It's placed in front of “Archi della Marina” in a tunnel dug in
16th century under the Palace of the Seminary of the Clerics.
These days one can only guess as to the usage
of the tunnel. It could have been for self-protection and escape of those in the
Seminary, as Sicily had been invaded countless times.
The building we are in - the Vuciata
Restaurant - is also an historical building going back centuries. Now it's been
revamped for modern purposes.
The market is
known for the “vuciata”, which means “scream”, shout by the sellers in order to
attract the attention of customers and most of all for high quality products.

Eggplant Parmesan
My eggplant was first-rate. At the price of
$7Euros, it was a steal.
The white wine we ordered
($4Euros each) was from orchards growing in the
Mt. Etna volcanic soil -
something Sicily is quite proud of.

Grilled seafood plate with salad
Billy's grilled seafood platter was also
notable, with prawns, squid, sea bass and sword fish.
There's a salad and one of those amazing
sweet southern Italian lemons.
This plate was $20Euros.

Canoli with pistachio nuts
Once again, being in Sicily, we had to have a
canoli, a traditional Sicilian dessert.
This was filled with
a creamed cheese and topped with chopped pistachios another local product from
the island.

Our bill for 2
Our bill for the 2 of us came to $46.50Euros
about $51USD.
The coperto was a reasonable $2Euros each,
and the canoli (which they call canolo here) was $5Euros.
Would we recommend Vuciata Restaurant?
Absolutely!
