Taking a "hop-on, hop-off
tour bus" from the city of Catania, we proceeded up the
Cyclops Riviera but
stopped at Aci Castello.
This charming town guarded
a hidden gem –
an 11th-century Norman Castle
- but we had more important things
to do - like have some delicious Ionian seafood for lunch.
Our pick was Le Muse
Ristorante Pizzeria in
Aci Trezza, the next town up.
Situated on the promenade of Acitrezza, Le
Muse Ristorante Pizzeria overlooks the harbor, and has a stunning view of the
sea

This Google map shows our itinerary hugging
Sicily's coast from Catania to Aci Castello where we got off and decided to walk
the remaining 2 kilometers to Aci Trezza.
Aci Trezza is another tiny town on the
Cyclops Riviera with a population of around 5,000 people.
The Faraglioni formation
On our walk up the coast, we got to see the
Faraglioni formation - famous in this area.
Greek legend has it that these rocks were thrown by Cyclops
in a battle with Odysseus. But in actuality, they were formed around 500,000 years ago
due to volcanic activity and the action of the Ionian Sea.
These sea stacks are a vertical geological
landform of rocks in the sea. Wind, water and "coastal geomorphology" (big word
for coastal changes due to geological elements) cause erosion and cracks in the
rock making them collapse into these free-standing heaps.
The menu
As we walked around beautiful Aci Trezza, the
first place we had chosen for lunch before we left for Catania was closed.
So we
continued to search and found Le Muse Ristorante which had this beautiful
terrace sea view of the harbor..
The menu looked inviting and the pricing was
reasonable. This restaurant offers a range of Mediterranean and Italian dishes,
including pizza, and traditional Sicilian cuisine.
They specialize in fresh seafood, and as you
can see, you can choose shrimp, fresh catch of the day, swordfish, calamari and
tuna.
Spaghetti Carbonata
We are traveling with a friend, and he
ordered this Spaghetti Carbonata which he said was quite tasty.
Steamed and clams mussels in broth
I was curious about a mixed fish dish that was to
have 3 white fish choices, so I ordered it.
Instead, the waiter brought me a plate of steamed
mussels and clams!
Even when I was ordering my "special 3-fish
dish" the waiter mentioned the steamed shellfish. I said, "no, no, not that
dish, this one here with the 3 fish..."
But I got the shellfish anyway.
Oh well, I guess I was supposed to have it!
To be fair, it was a generous portion of 30 shellfish
with some delicious broth and crispy-crusted bread.
So, it was all good.
Grilled swordfish
Billy had grilled swordfish which you can see
looks delicious. It was probably in the
Catania Fish Market just that morning!
Le Muse presents not only grilled fish but
they have raw, cold, and hot fish appetizers available too.
Cheesecake with marzipan
We made "friends" with some other diners who
had a table window side, and these lovely people bought us a dessert.
This cheesecake had a marzipan peach and
jellied fruit juice on top.
It was just great!
The bill for 3 people
Our particular bill, with a bottle of water,
white wine, $3Euro coperto charge each came to $59 Euro total.

There are three
rooms, including this magnificent outdoor terrace with its unique panorama of
the harbor.

perhaps make a reservation. Closed Mondays.

Book a table in advance, especially for
Sunday lunch. Arrive early to secure a spot on the sunlit upstairs balcony. Try
the mixed antipasta, which features lightly battered small fish/squid, mussels,
marinated raw fish, smoked salmon stuffed with couscous, and warm octopus salad.
Enjoy the seafood lunch with a perfect view of the sea.
Be aware that the pizza
oven is not operated on Sunday lunch.
