Our bus journey along Sicily's captivating eastern coastline neared its end, with the charming village of Aci Trezza as our final stop.

However, an historic treasure trove awaited us just before reaching our destination - the majestic Norman Castle in Aci Castello. Intrigued, my friend and I eagerly bought tickets to explore the castle's ancient walls.

But Billy, with a mischievous glint in his eye, opted to stay put.

He decided he wanted his own adventure, and struck up a conversation with a local.

A very interesting stranger indeed.

Professor Francisco, Aci Castello, Sicily

The distinguished Professor Francisco

Well-groomed with a dash of flair from his neck scarf, this man intrigued Billy, so he approached him for a conversation.

They hit it off right away.

Utilizing Google Translate, Billy found out that 90-year old Francisco was just a boy during WWII.

The Allies bombed his home town to smithereens and eventually chased the Germans out of Sicily.

What with one thing and another, Francisco - in the course of time - went to the University of Catania. Studying history and philosophy, became Professor Franciso, teaching classes at that University for decades.

Billy and the Professor discussed the news events of the day, and also the events of WWII.

Billy's Father served in England, and my Father served in India, which is why this was personal to us.

Throughout Italy we had been following the history of this war, having visited a war museum in Anzio. In Nettuno, Italy, we took a somber stroll in one of the many soldier memorial cemeteries that are located through the whole of Europe.

Professor Francisco was a living relic of that time period.

In the course of conversation, Francisco drew a quick map of Sicily showing where his home town was located - The one that was bombed so many years ago.

Billy was energized by this conversation, and when we returned home, he found the town of Caltagirone on the map.

You can see it marked clearly here.
