Beach
Vendors in Mazatlan, Mexico
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
Throughout Mexico,
it's a traditional scene to have
beach
vendors selling items on the beach.
The good part of this, is that you
needn't go anywhere for snacks, fruit or even hot food -- It all comes to
you! Below is a
short peek into this enjoying this beach convenience in
Mazatlan.
Vendor selling colorful beach buckets,
shovels and kites
Here you see this beach vendor selling
very popular beach buckets and shovels to make sand castles - a favorite
pastime for tourists who visit the sea.
Outside the photo is the kite he is
flying, and the other bag he carries is full of them.
Fresh fruit and crunchy snacks!
This vendor carries whole mangos on a
stick, and cut mangos in cups. You'll also see cups filled with cut
watermelon, and a tray of cut limes to squeeze over the fruit you have
purchased. Commonly, Mexican enjoy their fresh fruit with powdered chili and
lime... sometimes sugar too.
He also sells a crunchy, airy snack,
something we have never bought, as we tend to favor the fruit.
Donut vendor
Not to give you the impression that we
are "food saints" -- we have been known to buy donuts on the beach. This man
sells cream-filled pastries and donuts tossed in sugar.
He'll easily sell this whole tray and
more by the end of his shift.
More fruit, crunchy snacks and beach
buckets!
This vendor as the cut fruit, crunchy
snacks and in addition, he carries the beach buckets and shovels.
Notice the folding tray he carries over
his shoulder. When he has a sale, or when he needs a rest, he takes the tray
off his shoulder, opens it up and places his fruit tray on top. In this way,
he can display his product, prepare them for his customers and make change.
These cups of fruit run about $1USD each.
Baked fresh coconut delights
These coconut rounds are amazingly
delicious.
They are made from fresh, grated coconut,
cooked with sugar and coconut milk, then baked until crispy.
As a standard, there are 2 flavors: one
is natural coconut in its milk, and the other is usually vanilla.
The bowl under the plated coconut
delights carries her napkins and plastic bags for when customers make a
purchase.
Close up of these coconut delights
You can see the differences in these
coconut treats. The ones on the left are cooked with coconut milk and sugar
only, the ones on the right are the vanilla (sometimes with a hint of
cinnamon).
They are fresh, delicious, and ...
chewy!!
Price generally runs about $1USD each,
but depending on the beach, you can get 3-4 coconut rounds for 50Pesos,
bringing the price down to about 70US cents each.
Billy and I can usually split one
satisfactorily, keeping a 2nd one for
our
morning breakfast in the hotel.
