Billy loves a good steak
and wherever we go, he searches for various grills and restaurants in that
location.
We found ourselves in
Torreon,
Cuahuila, Mexico, and Billy saw this locally-famous place, so we thought to
try it for lunch.

Inside La Majada
From
our
hotel, we took a taxi to La Majada and walked inside. While lunch is our
largest meal of the day, and often the same for Latin Americans, when we arrived
at about 1pm, the place was empty. Local Mexicans did not fill up the place
until 2pm.
We had just recently eaten at
La
Palenque for
my birthday, where we were given 2-for-1 bottles of wine (!).
Since we had this extra bottle of wine, we
thought to take it to La Majada and if necessary, pay a corkage fee.
For odd reasons... our welcome at the
restaurant was a bit chilly or disconnected. We rarely experience this
phenomenon, as Mexico has a very emotionally warm culture, and foreigners are
normally welcomed.
Billy being a Chef, he made his way to the
food counter you see in the left side of the photo.
Another person immediately came up to us and
asked us "What are you doing?"
Odd.
I explained that "We came for lunch, and my
husband is a Chef. He was therefore curious about your meat offerings."
Met with blank stares, we found a table and
sat ourselves.

Rib Eye steak and baked potato on sizzling platter
A waiter eventually came to us and gave us a
menu. We also mentioned that we had a bottle of wine and would like to know the
corkage fee.
He seemed confused. Perhaps this was the
first time someone asked him that question.
Mr. Waiter said he would ask the Higher Ups
for a price and meanwhile, Billy and I chose our lunch meal.
The waiter came back and said the corkage fee
was 200Pesos (about $10USD). In the States this would be a bargain, but for
Mexico, this price was meant to be a deterrent.
The waiter recommended that we simply buy a
bottle of wine for that same price and then we could take our bottle back home.
That might have been a good idea, except that
we were leaving Torreon shortly, and we couldn't drink all that wine before we
left town. We would have had to give it to the maid or at the reception desk at
the hotel.
At any rate, we declined his offer and
ordered our meal.
Eventually the waiter came back with both
glasses and a wine opener to begrudgingly open our wine.
This sort of treatment seemed not only odd,
but slightly passive aggressive.
I mean... there was no one in the restaurant
at this time.
Our meal was delivered and the waiter did not
fill our glasses once. Not even after he opened our verboten bottle of wine.
La Majada filled up as we munched our potato
and steak, and a musician played on the stage. This made the restaurant seem
festive. Customers were obviously enjoying themselves.
No one checked on us about our meal, and we
had to flag someone - anyone - in order to request desert.

Cheesecake dessert
From the selections offered on a dessert
table, we chose the cheesecake with walnuts.
Wondering between us what the heck was going
on with the service here, we then asked for our bill.

Our bill for the 2 of us
Our bill for the two of us
came to about $52USD before tip.
Our meal was about a "B" or perhaps a 7+ on a
scale of 1-to-10, and the service was neglectful.
Unfortunately, we weren't thinking clearly
and tipped our non-existent waiter on the corkage fee.
Our bad.
Would we return?
NO.
Would we recommend this restaurant?
No.
It might just have been an off day, and the
restaurant was packed with locals enjoying their food and the music. Also, La
Majada gets good ratings on trip advisor and restaurant guru.
You might have a different experience so
certainly choose for yourselves. Our opinion is just our opinion based on our
personal encounter.
