Currency Conversion
It was my birthday while we
were visiting
Torreon,
Cuahuila, Mexico.
So for this special day,
Billy picked out a very locally-famous steak house called Restaurant Steak
Palenque.
It turned out to be the
perfect choice!
The bar at Steak Palenque
We took a taxi from
our
hotel to Steak Palenque for 60 Pesos, about $3USD.
When we arrived, the place was fairly empty,
but no matter. We were recognized right away and were able to choose any table
in the place that we wanted.
Steak Palenque offers a full bar, and an all
day long, 2-for-1 Happy Hour on Drinks.
Inside Steak Palenque
While our largest meal is
in the middle of the day, usually nearing 1pm, Mexicans generally eat their
lunches at 2pm.
You can see here that most
of the patrons have not yet arrived.
On the walls of this
favored restaurant are large photos of Mexican history and heroes. (How did they
get these photos?)
Since we had some time
before our meals arrived, I took a look around.
Mexicans are very proud of
their fight for freedom. In case you might not know, they fought to be
free three times. Once from the Spanish Conquistadors, generally accepted as
beginning in September, 1810. Once from the French beginning in 1861, and once
from their own dictator Presidente Porfirio Diaz in 1910.
The large photos on the
walls were fairly recent and emitted powerful intent.
Baby goats on the grill
While I walked around looking at the Mexican
Revolution photos, I peeked into the kitchen.
This restaurant is famous for their grilled
baby goats, and we saw customers enjoying this choice for lunch.
A full order of cabrito is about
$24USD.
Menu of American cuts of
meat
We hadn't known about the
local specialty of baby goat or perhaps we might have ordered some. We came for
the beef, however, and this menu shows you the pricing.
A T-Bone "Light" runs about
$12USD, and the highest option is an aged Rib Eye for $20USD.
Menu at Steak Palenque
This menu shows fish choices like shrimp
cocktail, salmon and filet of fish in several different preparations.
Steak Palenque also offers full Mexican
traditional platters, chicken, items from the grill and pastries.
Rib Eye, baked potato, grilled chilacas
I ordered the time-honored Rib Eye with baked
potato and grilled mild chiles.
Outstanding!
Cabreria, baked potato, grilled chilacas
Billy ordered the Filete de Cabreria,
considered to be the most succulent of the beef cuts.
He was not disappointed!
The Birthday Girl
Surrounded by loved ones
and having a fine meal, I am one Happy Birthday Girl.
Thank you!
Tres Leches cake divided into three pieces
Tres Leches is a traditional Mexican sponge
or butter cake that soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed
milk, and heavy cream.
This one has a mocha style whipped cream
frosting.
Surprisingly light and delicious, the three
of us chomped this cake down quickly!
The bill for 3 people
The total for the three of
us came to $66USD before tip.
You can see the 2 bottles
of Cabernet (2-for-one) marked on the menu.
Our portion of the bill
came to 1,030Pesos before tip, or about $52USD.
What a lovely meal.
Service was attentive and
fun, with our waiter joining in on the Birthday celebrations, convincingly
telling us that it was my 29th Birthday.
Hey, he made points with
me, that's for sure!
Would we return?
Absolutely.
Highly recommended.
