del Corso in Salerno, Italy

It was our first night in
Salerno, and after
several inconvenient train rides, we arrived at
our
apartment.
After getting set up, we
decided to walk into town for a meal.

Awning at Salumeria del Corso
We have often written about how wonderful the
Salumerias
are in Italy.
One can shop for
food to take home - or in this case -
eat a meal right at the
Salumeria itself.
This particular business has been
located here since 1958.

Variety of meats in the case
As usual, there are many choices of cured
meats, each with their own DOP - meaning it's a protected designation of origin.
Italians are very proud of their handmade
foods with special recipes and traditions surrounding them.
A DOP shows the customer that this item is of
high standards and quality.
Before visiting Italy, we had no clear
understanding of how many types of
salamis and Prosciuttos there were.

Good selection of cheeses
Then of course there are
the cheeses.
Once again these are marked with their DOP
with each region and province boasting of their quality goods.
There are hard cheeses that one can grate,
soft cheeses that one spreads on bread or crackers, cheeses encrusted in herbs
or peppercorns, aged cheeses, new cheeses and more.
Each has their own distinct flavor.

Prosciutto hams hanging from a ceiling
pole
Prosciutto ham is made in several regions of
Italy and each region boasts of their quality. It is made under strict quality
controls using sea salt, air and time. In some regions they use specially bred
pigs.
There are typically two types of Prosciutto:
Prosciutto cotto, which is cooked, and Prosciutto crudo, which is uncooked, yet
cured.
As you see in the refrigerated case in the
back, there is a selection of Italian wines.

Wine menu
Since
we came here for a meal, we were given a wine menu and a food menu also.
This wine list offers wine by the glass, in a
bottle, both white and red wine, as well as crafted beers and the very popular
drink, Aperol.
One can also order the house wine - which is
very good! - by the liter.

Menu of lunch and dinner offerings
These pages offer salads, a chopped
eggplant/olives/tomato/cheese dish called Caponata and all sorts of Taglieres.
Tagliere basically means a cutting board with
a mix of meats and cheeses.
The "coperto" here is only $1Euro.
Copertos are used in Italy in lieu of
tipping.

Outside the Salumeria
This is a very popular Salumeria and
customers were coming and going all during our meal.
The items offered here are at the perfect
time of eating.
There was nothing too green, too young, too
old, marked or bruised.
In "the business" this is called Grade A
produce or #1 Produce

Bill for 2 people
This is our bill for the meal we had here - a
liter of house red wine, a beautiful salad, Eggplant Parmignana and the
copertos.
It came to just over $30USD
Would we recommend this Salumeria in Salerno?
Absolutely!
