Just a round the corner
from our
apartment in Salerno, is this very popular restaurant named Al Dente.
The description "al dente"
generally refers to cooked pasta that is tender but firm and chewy when you
bite into it.
This day we literally
walked through a rainstorm to get to the restaurant, only to find out that it
was already packed and people were standing outside in line to get in.

Al Dente on a sunnier day
Rain or shine, there is always a crowd here waiting for a
table.
When we arrived I asked to
have my name put on the list. No problem. We ended up waiting about 30 minutes
for a table while
in the rain with our umbrellas up. We certainly weren't the only ones!
During that time, some other people came up and asked
about reservations and the woman said “No, we don’t accept reservations. If a
table is open you can take it, but if there are no tables I put your name on a
list.”
Ok, that sounds reasonable
and it's just what we had done.
However, some people arrived after us, and the same woman
lets them in. She eventually comes to us and says ”Well they had reservations.”
!?!?
"Your table will be ready in 10 minutes."
They must have had
something we didn't have, or they are regulars or they knew the owners or are
preferred clients or...

Very popular Al Dente
Here is the inside of Al Dente, and you can
see that every table and chair is taken.
When we had our restaurant in
Santa Cruz,
California, rainy days were great for business. We were often overflowing with
customers on these dark, drizzly days.
You can see the open air kitchen at the back.

Pasta Gualanegna
We finally got seated and we ordered our meal.
Billy chose a dish called Gualanegna
that sounded awesome.
Al dente pasta with capers, Kalamata black olives, olive oil,
Sorrento lemons,
and seasoned bread crumbs.
With these ingredients, it had every
indication that it would be "blow-out-your-taste-buds" fabulous.
But... it was dead.
It was screamingly... BLAND.
Sorrento lemons are famous for their
sweetness, Kalamata olives are powerful and capers should be tangy and bring a
contrast to the dish.
With disappointment, he gave the meal
about 2-3 rating.
Gosh... What happened?
It could have used a touch of anchovy paste
to liven it up, but, alas! Bland it was.

Pasta Carbonato
I ordered Pasta Carbonato with bacon, egg and
Pecorino Romano cheese, and it was a winner.
Billy looked lustily at my meal, and of
course I shared my plate with him.
By every right, his dish should have been a
kicker - but these things happen at restaurants.

Chefs in the kitchen
Open air kitchens are all the rage,
showcasing the Chefs' skill and the food they are preparing.
It was a very busy meal time preparation, and
our photo didn't slow them down for a moment.

Our lunch bill for two
This was the bill for the 2 of us, including
2 glasses of wine and the "coperto" which is a cover charge in lieu of tipping.
It came to $35Euros which is about $38USD.

Al Dente Spaghetteria business card
Would we recommend Al Dente Spaghetteria?
Yes.
Just don't order the Gualanegna!
