Traveling through Italy from

Faeto to Lecce by Bus and Train

Our short time in Faeto had come to a close. Our next stop was a 2,000 year old town located at the heel of the boot of Italy called Lecce.

But first, we had to purchase transport tickets.

Tabacchi stores are located all throughout Italy and one can renew time on cell phones here very easily. This particular shop also sold bus tickets out of Faeto.

Once again, I found myself distantly related to the family that ran Tabacchi here. So we went to Carmine Mastri’s shop to buy bus tickets ($3.80Euro each) to Foggia in order to get on the train to Lecce.

You can see on the map where these towns and cities are located.

From Faeto to Lecce is nearly 200 miles

We left Faeto early in the morning to catch the 8:40am bus to Foggia.

The bus stop was located just down the street from the town bar.

This bus took us straight to the train station in Foggia and - after two days of cold, drizzly weather - It was a beautiful morning.

We settled into the bus for the 1.5 hour ride to Foggia, which took us through some beautiful countryside.

Look how lush and green this is!

From the bus we often saw great fields of the Tuscan Poppy.

Apparently, these poppies originated in North Africa and work in harmony with seasonal grain cultivation.

This has been going on for over 3,000 years and remains of the plant have even been discovered in Egyptian tombs!

Who knew?

The bus took us directly to the train station where we purchased these tickets to Lecce on a second class train with one change in Bari.

We just barely made the train which left at a little after 10am.

Yup! Here we are, a-trainin' through Italy. What an efficient and convenient way of travel.

We arrived in Lecce between 3-4pm.

Then we walked to our B&B.

We were looking forward to a week in this gorgeous Romeo-and-Juliet sort of town.

This 2,000 year-old city is made of a special limestone - which is one of their greatest exports - and it makes the town all cream, latte, buttercup and ivory colored.

It's very beautiful.

See you there in our next story!
