Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
We're in
Ensenada,
Baja California and getting familiar with the place.
Most days after we eat our
delicious buffet offered by
our
hotel, we walk to a nearby coffee shop for a cappuccino and a tisana.
Tisanas are an herbal drink - hot or cold - boiled of different
combinations of dried flowers, herbs, dehydrated fruits and skins of fruits.
They can also be served as
a frappe and sweetened with honey. In many tisanas, the fruit is edible
after the drink is finished.
At the coffee shop Billy
contacted an Uber driver to take us to the malecon so we could find out what's
going on at the beach.
Map showing our walk
Most of the Uber and Didi rides we took
around
Ensenada cost from 40 to 70 Pesos, about $2-$3.50USD.
This was no exception and after we paid the
driver his 70Pesos to drop us off at one end of the malecon, we began our walk.
We walked all along
Playa Hermosa until we came across Plaza Contenedores - Plaza of the
Containers.
Plaza Contenedores
Set off a little way from
the road, we walked along the sand until we came closer to this grouping of
shipping containers. Since Ensenada has the only
deep water
seaport on the Baja serving international shipping routes, often there are
many empty shipping containers available to transform... into anything you can
think of.
This complex held several
international restaurants and bars.
Rincon Arabe
We walked along the inside of this
conglomeration of shipping containers and saw several different styles of
restaurants. Sushi was offered, there was traditional Italian, local Mexican
fare, a good craft beer selection, wines and gourmet coffees.
There were rooftop bars as well (you can see
one at the top of this photo) which could be a great place to watch the sunset.
Live music was offered in the evenings.
Menu at Rincon Arabe
After reviewing all of our choices, we
decided upon this Arab restaurant because we wanted to try a combination plate
with lamb. On the menu, this is the item on the bottom left.
Even though the hours posted said the Plaza
was open from 8 am to 10 pm daily, this Arab restaurant didn't serve food until
2pm.
Go figure, but it's Mexico.
We did a bunch more walking up the beach
eventually returning - hungry for lamb.
Akaisha holding an IPA
One of Billy's favorite styles of craft beer
is an IPA - meaning Indian Pale Ale.
Here in Mexico they are called "EE-pahs" and
Billy was surprised to find a can of this on the menu.
In our experience, we have only had IPAs on
tap at a brewery, so this can was a treat!
Lamb Gyro with relish
Our mouths were watering for the
combination-plate-for-2, but unfortunately, this plate was not available.
WHAAT?!
Ok, so
flexibility
is a good thing and we both ordered lamb gyros with hummus instead.
With a view of tourists riding horses
on the beach below, it all turned out well.
We would recommend going to the Plaza
Contenadores and find which flavor of restaurant you might prefer. Also the
rooftop bar could be a great evening drinking craft beers and
wine from
the Guadalupe Valley.
Bring a jacket, it gets windy.
