What Are the Requirements for the Portugal D7 Visa?

Cristina Cordoba

The D7 Portugal retirement visa is meant for people who intend to permanently move to Portugal. This visa lets non EEA, EU, or Switzerland citizens get an opportunity to migrate to Portugal. The D7 retirement visa scheme was launched in 2007 to help those who meet specific requirements. Discover how to retire in Portugal on a d7 visa below:

Conditions For the D7 Visa

Every individual looking to move to Portugal via the D7 visa permanently has to meet the criteria below:

Type of income

Suppose you intend to enroll for the D7 visa and move to Portugal permanently. In that case, you must have credible sources of income, such as income from a monthly pension, dividends, investments, interests, and royalties. Additionally, you must have income from US Social Security or a tenanted property.

Range of income

As of 2024, a potential applicant for the visa must have passive income that's amounts to €820 monthly. Note that the €820 amount is the minimum sum and it is for one applicant alone. If there are others included in the application like a spouse, partner, and/or children, then an additional sum of income is required.

If you're adding your spouse, or partner to the application, you must provide at least an additional 50 percent of the specified €820 monthly earnings which is €410. As for dependent children, the applicant must provide an additional 30 percent of their €820 a month income.

Age limit and saving requirement

Potential applicants for this visa must be 18 years or older. Additionally, applicants must have saved up funds in the bank for at least a year, equivalent to at least 12 times the required monthly income for qualification. So, a single applicant should have over €10,080 saved in the bank.

Is there a language requirement for intending applicants?

While there isn't any language requirement for intending applicants, you must prove you have an A2 level in Portuguese language when you decide to enroll to be a citizen of Portugal. This would be much later and can be done after you've moved into the country for a while not before.

Additional requirements for potential applicants

Applicants must not have any past or present criminal record

You must possess a health insurance plan that offers you health benefits in Portugal

Applicants must receive a Number Fiscal (NIF) from Portugal if they want to be eligible

You must secure a Portuguese address (either a tenanted property or your property) to be eligible

Applicants must open an account in a bank in Portugal to be eligible

Conclusion

These requirements must be met before you can apply for the visa. However, be informed that these requirements can vary according to the VSF office where you are submitting your visa application. It is recommended that intending applicants work with an attorney to make sure they meet the necessary criteria and get a smooth application. Once your enrollment has been verified, you can expect to get approval and successfully move to Portugal.
