Hotel La
Siesta - Historic District
Mazatlan, Mexico
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
We had finished up our trip through
Mexico's
Copper Canyon on the El Chepe
train, and spent some time in the city of
Culiacan.
But it was time to hit the beach! We took
a bus from Culiacan and the trip
was about 4 hours.
Upon arriving, we then
took a Jeepney to our vintage
hotel, right on the beach - Hotel La Siesta!
Inside our hotel, a poster of Mazatlan
in 1936
Check. Out. This. Poster.
Here you have a group of sport fishermen
with the sailfish they caught lined up behind them. One of the guys has a UC
Davis tee shirt on!
The ladies, in the
meanwhile, have every stitch of clothing on - including their high heels
and one is wearing a tiara - sitting on lounge chairs on the sidewalk in
front of Hotel La Siesta. Not surprisingly, a very common sight here in
Mexico, one woman is doing some knitting
or sewing. Notice
the bright red coupe with fins and white wall tires parked behind them.
Hotel La Siesta today
Since it was a holiday when we arrived,
we were lucky to get a room with a garden view.
Painted old wooden floorboards creaked as
we walked to our second story room which fortunately, had modern air
conditioning.
The swimming pool was down below in the
garden area. You will notice a white bottomed, blue bottle water dispenser
on each floor.
Another poster of Carnaval in Mazatlan,
1952
Here you have Miss Hotel La Siesta, Miss
Mazatlan, and Miss Sinaloa with their tiaras on while sipping on Coca Cola.
What a flash into the past these posters
offered us!
Refreshing private swimming pool
It had been a hot trip, and Billy
couldn't wait to jump into the pool downstairs.
Rooftop view of the ocean
This was
the view from our hotel, and the
sea beckons.
Isn't it gorgeous? Notice how blue the
sky is - not a cloud anywhere!
Renovated historic district
After eating dinner and watching the
sunset, we took a walk around the area and discovered this historic section
of town.
By the late 1700s, pirates had been
purged from the port area of this section of Mazatlan, and the early 1800s
brought more ship traffic, causing Mazatlan to grow.
In the Historical District of Mazatlan,
there are many buildings that have been renovated to reflect an earlier
style of living. These walking streets were beautifully done, clean and
classy.
This area waiting for renovation?
Another block showed
similar buildings that haven't been fully renovated, but the drawings on the
painted sides were intriguing.
Trumpet player
Isn't this great? An artist's rendition
of a trumpet player painted on the rough plaster sides of a building.
Just around the corner
This was a fairly large area of renovated
places, showcasing restaurants, stores and hotels.
On a return visit we have promised
ourselves to do more exploring in this area of town!
