Antigua is two and a half hours from Panajachel, and we find ourselves visiting this Colonial City as an overnight stopover on our way to the international airport in Guatemala City or as a quick treat and getaway from daily life at the Lake.

Guatemala is a country known for its coffee and there are lots of coffee houses located in this beautiful town.

El Viejo Cafe

El Viejo Cafe

El Viejo is a French bakery and restaurant. We're telling you, what a treat! It's a popular place in the mornings to grab a cappuccino and a piece of pastry right out of the oven.

Decor is country style and casual. During the week, it's no problem to find a seat but on weekends, when the Guatemaltecos come in from the capitol, the place is packed to the rafters and flows out in the street. To the left in this photo, the building opens up into a garden restaurant.

Coffee and free WiFi go hand in hand and people love to sit here in the morning to catch up on email and online news. However, coffee is great any time of the day, and Viejo Cafe is open breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also serve beer, wine and mixed drinks.

Fresh pastry!

Here you see some sweet baguettes, regular baguettes, apple strudel, croissants and various other delectables in the pastry case.

One of Billy's favorites is to order pan au chocolate and a cappuccino. The pastry is still warm, fresh from the oven! And truly, it's the best we've had since living in France!

Old photos of the family owners as well as old equipment like the radio on top of the pastry case are placed all throughout the restaurant.

Service is quick and attentive, and you must stop by for one of their incredible pastries.
