Retirement; like your parents, but way cooler
In 1991 Billy and Akaisha Kaderli retired at the age
of 38. Now, into their 4th decade of this
financially independent lifestyle, they invite you
to take advantage of their wisdom and experience. |

Taverna
dell'800
Sorrento, Italy

We were in lovely
Sorrento,
on the western coast of southern Italy.
We hadn't had anything much
for meals lately other than our
remarkable lunches from the
Salumerias and of
course, the
many
pizzas available.
So we were looking for a
real meal, you know... something hot on a plate. And maybe some vegetables or a
salad.
Wandering around through
the sidewalk cafes and picturesque shops of Sorrento, we came upon Taverna dell'800.

Sign for the restaurant
This was the sort of place that looked old
fashioned, someplace where you might bring your Italian Grandmother.
It better be good, because Grandma knew how
to cook and you couldn't fool her.
Perfect.

Inside the Taverna
See what I mean?
This could easily be her own home with the
piano in the corner, the brick fireplace and all the plates and photos on the
wall.

Warm and cozy interior
As a tavern, I could easily see in my mind's
eye how people would come here during the cold, drizzly winters and enjoy the
snug fire. Music wafting through the air while eating a meal would certainly
call me back...
But it was a
GORGEOUS spring day here and the
weather was splendid.
We wanted to sit outside.

The bar
Before getting to
the outside seating, we
passed the bar.
In this Catholic country is drinking and revelry a sin?
Who knows, but we have a crucifix and a
calendar featuring the sacred heart of Jesus.
We are having this business blessed by the
People Who Matter.
That's all you have to know.

The menu
The menu is reasonably priced, with various
spaghettis, pennettes, raviolis and cannellonis.
You can have them with pesto, with clams,
Arrabbiata style or with a simple meat sauce.
Yum!

More menu items
This page lists salads and desserts.
Unlike getting a simple "house salad" - when
a restaurant wants to feature an item, they claim it with the name of the
restaurant itself.
The top menu item listed here was the
Insalatone dell'800.
Mixed country greens, Sorrento-grown
tomatoes, beans, tuna and egg.
If we were in France, this would be called a
Salade Niscoise.

Akaisha at the table in an alleyway of
Sorrento
We have ordered and we each have a glass of
wine.
Fresh bread is on the table and - for the
most part in Italy - "Salad dressing" is olive oil, salt and pepper.
We have not yet seen butter served with any
bread.
Bread is for mopping up the flavors on your
plate, or to have some olive oil to dip it into.

Pennette Arrabbiata
Billy ordered this classic Arrabbiata, a
spicy tomato-sauced pasta.
I make this at home myself, but I add some
yummy ingredients like sausage, mushrooms, and onions.

Insalatone dell'800
This salad was quite filling with all the
protein in it.
There's the tuna, egg and the sharp shavings
of Parmesan cheese.
Truly flavor-full and satisfying.

Two satisfied customers!
A toast to YOU!
We have just started our meal.
Billy is taking our photo, and here I am
trying to squeeze into the frame.
The food looks marvelous, the day is
beautiful and we are happy to be together in
Italy!

Digestifs after lunch
After we were finished with our lunch, our
waiter offered us 2 digestifs.
The one on the left is a melon digestif, and
the one on the right is the famous Lemoncello made from Sorrento lemons.
POWER-PACKED with flavor, these small drinks
were lovely to sip after our fine meal.

Da Boys
Billy is in front, of course, and the men
behind him are the waiter (on the left) and the Chef (on the right).
See how blue the sky is behind them?
Spectacular day.

Our bill for two
As you can see once again, there is a "coperto"
a cover charge for sitting at a table. This is placed on the bill in lieu of
needing to tip the waitstaff.
Our bill for 2 meals, 2 glasses of wine, a
bottle of water and our cover charge comes to $37.50Euros or about $40USD.

Great philosophy for Life
No matter where you are, what age you are or
what you do for a living, this is a great philosophy for Life.
How many of us do this?
Such great advice.
Would we recommend Taverna Dell'800?
Absolutely!
