Rosies Patties
Nevis, West Indies

It's the talk of the town -
Rosie's Pattys.
With no exact, specified
location, any taxi driver or "combi" will take you to Rosies.
It's a local eatery
celebrated for offering authentic Caribbean flavors, particularly with its
signature pattys.
What's a patty?
We had to find out.

Map showing the location of Rosie's
Patties
One of the joys of being on Nevis, is
that it retains a community feeling.
Not yet overly developed, people know each
other and greet each one by name.
Rosie's doesn't have a conventional address,
but "everyone" knows where her restaurant is.
You can see her location here on the
map.

The sign for Rosie's Patties
Nevis is quite lush, and
Rosie's is located right in the middle of it all. It is known as a beloved
fast-food place that captures the essence of Nevisian cuisine with fresh
ingredients and vibrant recipes.
I don't know that I'd call
Rosie's a fast-food joint... but the part about fresh and vibrant is spot on.

Covered patio seating
We arrived by combi, and planned to meet a
friend, Sherilisa, for lunch.
Everyone swears by Rosie's so we were here to
find out what the fuss was all about.
Here's a photo of the open-air garden
seating.
It's very inviting, isn't it?

Garden view at Rosie's
Here's a closer look at the garden area.
There are banana palms, other palms, hibiscus
bushes and more.
Lots of sunshine.

Rosie!
Here's Rosie, the friendly, outgoing
restaurant owner.
Rosie explained that she "more or less"
invented the patty. It's a mix of Caribbean flavors inside a Mexican style
empanada.
And why not?
She practiced on her friends, then opened up
a small place to sell them.
One thing led to another and VOILA! She has
moved to this larger location with a garden and a home behind the restaurant.
Business is good.

Menu at Rosie's. Prices are in EC.
Taking a look at this menu, you might agree
that it's not exactly fast-food.
With the seafood, salads and pasta offerings,
I think it could be classified as a regular eatery, a "real" restaurant.

Billy and Akaisha drinking Rosie's special
Rum punch
On
Nevis, as on
other
Caribbean Islands, every restaurant has their own take on Rum punch. Rosie
was no exception, and she bragged that hers was the "best on the island."
In the Caribbean, Rum is a locally made
product and an important segment of their history.
Nevis, part of the British Leeward Islands,
became a key sugar producer by the mid-17th century after British colonization
in 1628. Enslaved Africans cleared dense forests, planted cane cuttings, and
maintained fields.
These workers managed fermentation vats and
operated stills, a skilled task passed down through generations. These Africans
influenced rum-making techniques and introduced their own food styles to the
islands.

Coconut shrimp
While waiting for Sherilisa to show up, we
went ahead and ordered the special of the day, a coconut shrimp appetizer.
Truthfully, these shrimp were some of the
best we have ever had. They were very crunchy, not greasy and the shrimp
were quite moist in the center.
A real winner!

Sherilisa
Here is Sherilisa, whom we met at The
Yachtsman Grill.
She is smart, observant, and good at her job.
Asking her about Rosie's, Sherilisa told us
all about it. We invited her out to lunch so we could enjoy the Caribbean
patties together.

Rum punch and patty
Here is one of Rosie's
patties.
In Mexico, these would be
called empanadas, a half-moon shaped dough pocket filled with various items like
fish, pork, beef, or vegetables.
Rosie took this idea and
made it her own.

Salmon patty
So why not fill one with smoked salmon?
Billy ordered this one with a
dill cream cheese filling.
He said it was great!

Sweet chili pork patty
I had asked Rosie what her #1 seller was, and
I'd try that one.
Turned out to be the Sweet chili pork patty,
and yes!
It was delicious!

Pineapple coconut bread pudding
In our personal history, bread pudding takes
a notable spot.
A down-home style dessert on one end of the
gauge - bread-and-butter bread pudding is exquisite and elite on the other end
of the scale.
Here we were presented with a pineapple
coconut bread pudding which we simply had to try.
We ordered one serving with 3 spoons, one for
Sherilisa to help us out.
Yeah.
You gotta try it.

Bill for 3 people
Our bill for the 3 of us came to $70USD
before tip.
The food at Rosie's was excellent, and
flavorful.
As is common for smaller, community-driven
restaurants, the exact location isn't specified with a fixed address in tourist
guides.
But any combi or taxi driver will take you
there.
Do we recommend this eatery?
Absolutely!
