We are on the lovely island of Nevis in the West Indies.

Since we worked here in 1991, we are still in contact with friends that we made "back then." It was our intention to go to the water taxi location on Nevis and check out the schedule for the water ferry to the sister island of St. Kitts. Our friend, Roger, owns The Spice Mill on Reggae Beach and in a day or two, we planned to meet up with him for lunch and a beach day.

But first, we needed to check out times and pricing at Islander Watersports Nevis, or Blu Waves. They both offer the service. Ask if Djon is around, he will take care of you.

The Immigration Lady leads the way!

Since Nevis-St. Kitts is an international destination, there are Immigration Officers present to check out passports and tourist papers.

This lady was upbeat and helpful - so much so, that when we asked her about "that place up the hill" - she insisted on accompanying us and showing us the way.

Here we are, following her down the wooden plank walkway along the beach.

The view out towards St. Kitts Island

When we get up the hill and enter On The Rocks Bar, we see this expansive view of the ocean with St. Kitts just across a channel called "The Narrows."

This narrow channel, part of the Caribbean Sea, connects the Atlantic Ocean to the east with the Caribbean Sea to the west.

We understand that On The Rocks is a popular place to watch the sunset. With this far reaching view, I can understand why.

We offered the Immigration Officer a drink of her choice, and she picked Coca Cola.

We knew her name at the time, but unfortunately, I didn't put it in my notes.

Sorry, my Friend!

She was a real sweetheart. We saw her again when we made the trip to Reggae Beach and connected with some fun laughs.

Jet skis ready to be rented

To the right is Oualie Beach, which has rooms to rent for tourists, plus there is a restaurant. The water taxi lands here at the dock, so between both of these sources, there is a continuous demand for jet ski rental.

You can jet ski up and down the island or do circles in the water if you want.

As you can see, the prices are lofty.

But then again, this is the Caribbean, and it's not a bargain destination.

This is a super place to daydream

One could simply look out here indefinitely.

Time just passes away, and you can hear the ocean lapping against the rocks below.

What time is it? What DAY is it?

It's a perfect set up.

On The Rocks is the obvious name for this Bar and Lounge, with the pun intended.

The soft lapping of the Caribbean is mesmerizing.

Water taxi and Immigration Office

The building here with the blue roof is the office for purchasing water taxi tickets as well as for Immigration checking out your papers.

As you can see, it was quite a short walk from here to the Bar and Lounge.

As we sat here over lunches over a couple of days, we saw people arrive from St. Kitts, a wedding party leaving for St. Kitts, families renting the Jet skis, and various other water activities.

The wedding party was dressed to the nines. And there was no holding back on the sparkles! Sequins everywhere on these flowing gowns, and men looked studly in their in tuxedos, little children dressed in their Sunday best.... it was heartwarming and joy-filled.

It took several water taxis to get them all boarded.

The lunch menu

This Bar and Lounge is a casual dining spot and the menu is concise but well thought out.

Online review sites give the service here high praise and we must admit that it was quite friendly.

There were several items on the menu that looked appealing.

Oh Goodie!

Remember, these prices are in EC or The East Caribbean Dollar, which as of today is about 37US cents.

So, for instance, the Rum Punch, listed at $20EC runs just over $7USD.

The islands are famous for their Rum Punch drinks, and each place has their own twist to the drink. There is a restaurant called Sunshine's on Nevis which is famous for the "Killer Bee" Rum Punch, which, by the name, you would only imagine the strength of the punch! (pun intended!)

There's M'Boy!

Billy loves the ocean, loves the water, loves to swim (dive, snorkel), loves the color blue.

I think he's in heaven!

Conch fritters and tartar sauce at On The Rocks Bar and Lounge, Nevis, West Indies

Caribbean Conch Fritters

This seafood dish is common and popular all over the Caribbean island chain, with each island having their own version.

Generally it's conch meat tenderized and finely chopped, mixed with onions, bell peppers (red or green), celery, garlic and a hot spicy pepper like scotch bonnet or habanera.

This blend is put together with egg, milk or beer, and lime juice.

Making a ball, it is then deep fried in hot oil until it's crispy.

Dipping sauce are various renditions of tartar sauce, but some can be quite creative!

Eaten alongside a beer, it's a perfect combination.

This isn't your Mrs. Paul's fish stick.

This is crispy, juicy, fresh Mahi-Mahi on a home made bun with trimmings and a salad on the side.

Another delectable treat.

Totaling $65 EC Dollars, our lunch came to about $24USD.

A seat by the sea, fresh seafood, wonderful Carib Beer.

How  can you miss?

Having a beer with a view

I've spoken about Carib Beer before, a distinctly Caribbean creation which is fresh and crisp. Not heavy but has distinction.

And, yes, having a beer with ice is quite common on these hot islands.

Another lunch, another day

Fish sticks and a Quesadilla, both with their own dipping sauce.

As usual, Billy and I share entrees so we each get to enjoy differing flavors in one meal.

These items were both very flavorful and the crisp beer was the perfect accompaniment!

Here we are, windblown and squinting in the glorious sun.

On The Rocks is a unique and special environment. It's free of unnecessary clutter and the sea breeze blows gently through the restaurant, cooling things down on a hot tropical day.

Would we recommend On The Rocks to you for a meal or cocktail? Maybe a cold afternoon beer?

Not to be missed!
