Naples, Italy

Built in the 13th century
and located in the
heart of Naples, The Naples Cathedral is known as one of the most beautiful
and impressive buildings in the city.
This cathedral is dedicated
to Our Lady of the Assumption, is especially famous for the relics of Saint
Gennaro, patron saint of the city.
An earthquake severely
damaged the cathedral in 1349, plus it was also bombed
in 1943
in WWII.
With such a history, let's
take a look!
The front of the Cathedral
Its façade is predominantly Gothic with its
pointed arches and stained glass windows. There are also intricate stone
carvings and sculptures.
The interior, on the other hand, is primarily
in the Baroque style, which emphasizes curved lines, domes and columns.
This is a very popular tourist site and here
you see tourists gathering outside to enter.

towards the main altar
San Gennaro - the patron saint of Naples -
was a Christian bishop who is believed to have been martyred during the
persecution of Christians under Roman Emperor rule in the early 4th century.
Supposedly, some blood was taken after
Gennaro was killed and placed in a vial. The miracle of San Gennaro refers to
the spontaneous liquefying of this dried blood within the vial that is kept in a
shrine dedicated to him.
This event typically occurs on specific dates
each year, and it is closely observed and celebrated by Neapolitans.
It is a major event in Naples.
The ornate ceiling
During the Second World War, efforts were
made to protect historic sites like the Naples Cathedral. In some cases,
priceless artworks and religious relics were removed to prevent them from being
damaged or stolen.
These frescos on the ceiling and along the
upper side walls are spectacular.
Frescos are scenes painted right into wet
plaster. The plaster dries and the painting is preserved into the wall.
The baptismal font on the left
The baptismal font was made in the 17th
century. It is of colored marble and has been ornately sculpted.
This cathedral is not just a religious site
but also a venue for various religious and cultural events throughout the year.
A closer look
Here you see the font more closely.
Baptismal fonts are used for adults wanting
to convert to Christianity, or when parents being in their young babies to be
baptized into the Church.
It is sobering to consider the value of the
items in Cathedrals such as this one. The art works, the silver and gold
objects, the jeweled chalices, and all the marble on display adds up.
This does not even take in the religious
significance, the artistic and cultural heritage, or how international tourism
affects the local economy.
Buildings such as Naples Cathedral are -
simply put - priceless.
Young children resting on a white marble
lion
These children feel quite at home
resting on this centuries-old white marble lion.
It appears that this Cathedral, with all of
its history and solemn moments, is simply a part of this family's daily life.
Would we recommend that you go and see for
yourself? Yes!
