Mayan
Villas Hotel
Chiquila, Quintana Roo,
Mexico

We were at the beginning of
our adventure to the paradise island of
Holbox in the Mexican state of Quintana
Roo on the
Yucatan Peninsula.
We took a one-way flight
from Guadalajara to Cancun on Volaris airline (about $70USD each), then a shared
taxi ride ($50USD each) to the small town of
Chiquila, Mexico and arrived here
at the hotel late in the afternoon.
We didn't know what
Chiquila was like or what we would find here, but we had booked 2 nights at
Mayan Villas Hotel.

Chiquila is an ancient Mayan port site on
Laguna Conil and centuries ago, the population was noted to be about 5,000
people.
For ages, there have been wars between
the various governments and the Mayan locals here and many of the residents fled
to the island
of Holbox. Today the population is about 2,000 and this town still
holds a
significant Mayan influence.
You can see the beautiful Mayan physiology in
the local people.

Vase on a rock
The office is straight through these sliding
glass doors.
We paid 850Pesos a night (about $43USD) for
our very small room.
Fortunately, it had air conditioning and hot
water, and we were promised breakfast in the morning.
On the website we read that there was a
restaurant here at the hotel serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, but I think with the
timing of Covid, it had virtually shut down.

Empty swimming pool
Not that we needed a swimming pool - it was a
bit cool for that due to pending rain - but if we wanted to use it, the pool had
been drained.
So there was no chance for that at this time.

Simple breakfast
When I asked about having
dinner that night at the hotel, we were told the restaurant had been closed, and they only
offered breakfast from 8am to 10 am in the morning.
Since the only open
restaurant in town didn't open until later in the evening, we
ate travel
food in our room for dinner. Waiting for breakfast we sort of dreamed of
omelets or bacon and eggs or something. But instead, we received this simple
breakfast of fresh fruit, dry toast, jam and coffee.
Still, having breakfast
offered with one's stay at a hotel is definitely a benefit, and worth noting.
This got us
to the ferry
and to the Island of Holbox, as we decided to only stay one night and not the
two we had booked. The town was virtually closed for much activity, and had we
known that, we would have skipped Chiquila altogether and simply continued our
first day of travel
onward to Holbox.
But... this is the
difference between having an adventure and having
everything-planned-out-on-a-tour type of travel.
Would we return?
No. We would have continued
our travel day onto the ferry and then to the island of Holbox.
