Isla Holbox Beach: A Paradise in the Yucatan

Isla Holbox Beach is a slice of paradise on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, just north of Cancun. This car-free island is a tranquil escape known for its stunning Caribbean-style beaches, turquoise water, and laid-back atmosphere.

Stretching for 26 miles and measuring almost a mile wide, Isla Holbox offers a variety of beachfront experiences. Whether you're seeking a secluded spot to soak up the sun or a lively area with beachfront bars and restaurants, you'll find it here.

Here are some photos of these magnificent beaches for you to enjoy.

Bikini clad woman on Holbox main beach

Thongs are the style of the day on Holbox. I'm not sure if we even saw bodies without them!

This nicely tanned woman is gazing back at the main beach from the water.

A boat is docked, and there are many palapas and umbrellas for shade.

Main beach from out in the water, Holbox, Mexico

From the shallow water looking back at the beach

The waters here on Holbox, for the most part, are very shallow. One can walk out a good ways and still be only thigh-high in the sea.

The simple structure you see straight ahead provided shade for those who wanted to wade out and then come back to relax.

This is the main wharf where tourists watch the sunset in the evenings.

This nightly "event" is quite a social gathering.

This is probably the busiest beach we have visited in a long while.

Being an international tourist destination, there were languages from all over the world being spoken here.

Young people, young families and grandparents visiting their grandkids were all enjoying these white sand beaches and turquoise waters.

Beach vendors selling mangos, Holbox, Yucatan, Mexico

Beach vendor selling mangos and Frisbees

Vendors would push their carts up and down these beautiful white sands selling coconuts, mangos, Frisbees and other tropical offerings.

Makes it very convenient!

Tourists sitting in inches of sea water

On this side of Mexico, the waves are gentle. There is no body surfing here, but there is a good interest in Kiteboarding due to the wind that kicks up.

These people are enjoying the lapping of the water over their bodies and the wide open skies.

The rippled sand

The sand here on Holbox has a mixture of clay in it.

The sea leaves its rippled mark on the shore as it recedes at lower tides.

These beaches are very expansive.

Beach bars were everywhere.

This one advertises a Mexican Boyfriend for Rent.

Whether it's true or not, it's a great place to have your photo taken!

Massage station, Isla Holbox, Yucatan, Mexico

Massage bed

Massages on the beach were commonplace.

These massage beds under the shade offered a relaxing and semi-private area to enjoy the sea breeze and a massage.

There were also areas that offered morning yoga classes.

Another sign offering activities

All sorts of activities and tours are offered on Holbox. One can swim with the whale sharks, go sailing, take island tours to visit bio-reserves, go kayaking and more.

Wide open spaces beach and sky, Isla Holbox, Yucatan, Mexico

My favorite style of beach

These wide-open, white sand, turquoise waters and blue skies are my favorite kind of beach.

It's the kind of place where one can dream and dream... and feel the gentle breeze on your skin.

Short wharf with conch shells, Isla Holbox, Yucatan, Mexico

Short wharf with conch shell decorations

This little wharf was right in front of Amaite Restaurant, and we would see young models here for photo shoots. It's a picturesque place.

One evening there was a dinner celebration with candle light, white table cloths and waiter service on this wharf.

Quite romantic!

Holbox uses conch shells a lot for decoration.

Beautiful.

Several people on beach lounges, Isla Holbox, Mexico

Palapas providing shade for beach goers

These handsome palapas were up and down the beach providing shade for the tourists.

Generally, if you buy a certain amount of beer or food from the attached bar or restaurant, you are able to stay under the palapa all afternoon.

The one place we asked about this charged about $15USD per person as a minimum in food and drink.

Lovely Palapas on white sand beach, Holbox, Yucatan, Mexico

More palapas down the beach

We walked and walked and walked down the beach and palapas, bars and restaurants pretty much covered the whole area.

There is some sea grass on the shore, but not much out in the ocean itself.

We have been to beaches like Belize where the sea grass is definitely an issue. Here, not at all.

Walking egret and boats in the sea, Holbox, Yucatan, Mexico

An egret walks the shore

Bird life flourishes on Holbox.

There is an island called Isla Pajaros (Bird Island) where a tour boat will bring you. This is an area where flamingos eat and live alongside other birds as well

This beautiful egret struts confidently about on the shore.

BRRRR!!!

Windblown palm and beach lounge chairs Isla Holbox, Yucatan, Mexico

Umbrellas and lounges

We mentioned Kiteboarding as a pastime on this island, and this little palm bears testimony to the winds coming from the sea.

The one in front lost his whole head, and this little guy looks like he's hanging on...

More umbrellas and lounges on shore.

There's also a nice manmade jetty on which to walk and get a different view.

Here we are!

We're standing in front of the little wharf at the Amaite Restaurant.

This island was enchanting.

Coconut vendor

This vendor sells fresh, cold coconut water. The coconuts are stored in his little blue cooler.

Did you know that fresh coconut water is healthy for you?

It has less sugar and calories than a sports drink, and offers calcium, Vitamin C, potassium, and phosphorus.

Get juiced on the beach!

Beach sign

This style of sign is always so fun.

It shows you where Ukraine, Thailand, Peru, New Zealand, Australia and Portugal are.

That's just on this side. More locations are listed on the other side of the pole.

Kite boarding schools on Isla Holbox, Yucatan, Mexico

Holbox Island is considered to be a safe place to learn Kiteboarding.

With shallow waters, no rocks and gentle winds, one can easily learn how to Kiteboard at this school.

These young women are making memories to take home.

A visit to a paradise island during their youth is an experience they'll remember their whole lives.
