Baja California is probably
best known for its beachside
fish
tacos, the
wines
from the Guadalupe Valley and
it's
up-and-coming restaurants. But in the last decade or so, the Baja has
seriously upped its craft beer game.
We came for the wines and
found the beers!
Who knew?
Micro breweries are
springing up all over the city of
Ensenada.
Catching the attention of
the Cruise
Industry, there are even Mexican Craft Beer Tours available.
Come take a look at the Tap
Room de Canneria.

Map of the location of the Tap Room
It was on our way
back from eating lunch at
Tacos
Fenix that we discovered the Tap Room de
Canneria.
It's not far from
our
hotel. So after a delicious afternoon nap, we decided to return later on and try
out the craft beers that were offered here.

daily
Initially, the craft beer scene was not allowed to
develop due to two Mexican industrial beer-making companies controlling nearly
99 percent of the country's beer market.
They dominated beer consumption through
exclusivity contracts that they held at 95 percent of beer-drinking
establishments.
These conglomerates agreed to purchase the
expensive liquor licenses for restaurants, bars and stores, in exchange for the
venues not selling their competitors’ beer. So this left the smaller Baja breweries
unable to sell their beer even at their local retailers.
Boooo!
But not long ago, the government changed the law hoping to
put an end to the beer duopoly in Mexico.
Forcing Grupo Modelo and Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma
to reduce their number of exclusivity agreements to just 20 percent of their
total accounts, the artisanal beer industry flourished.
Baja is now producing most of Mexico’s craft
beer.

available here at the Tap Room
Craft beers have everything
to do with being an artist, driven by the same passion as a painter or musician.
The grains are the media for the craftsman, but it is the play of hops that
creates a signature for the brewery.
Here you see the dozen
current beers offered in this small but solid brewing establishment.
You want flavor?
Go for the
ingenuity that these brew masters provide!

Inside the Tap Room
With the unpretentious
interior one could misjudge this little bar. But apparently, the place gets
rockin' after 10pm.
Just like
Hussong's
Cantina, the floors are wooden and simple.

Carlos the Head Brewer
Since we had arrived late afternoon, we had
the place almost to ourselves. We began chatting with Carlos, who turned out to
be the Head Brewer here at the Tap Room.
He recommended that we try the Brumeuse after
we finished our IPA (Indian Pale Ale, and pronounced EEE-pah in Mexico.)

An IPA we tried
Of course, our IPA was just
as we expected - delicious - then we went for a glass of Brumuese.
Satisfied on all accounts!

Our bill for 4 craft
beers
Before tip, our bill came
to 300Pesos or about $15USD for the 4 beers.
Service was attentive and
the beer was bodacious.
Would we recommend the Tap
Room for you?
ABSOLUTELY!
