The city and state of
Oaxaca are
known for delicious and varied cuisine. The city itself is cultured, so you can
find everything from locally made moles (MOH-lays) to Italian, Chinese and even
German food!

Berlina
This German style bistro is
one of the best values in town.
Berlina moved from the main
walking street Andador de Macedonia Alcala, across the
street from the
Santo Domingo Cathedral, to above Restaurante Danzantes.
We used to go to their
previous location and just loved the change of menu from the regular offerings
in town.
We were looking forward to
having some meals there on our return visit.

Ancient stairway leading up to
the Terraza and the Bistro.
One thing about visiting
Colonial Cities, is that many of the buildings are pretty
ancient. These stairs were worn silly and one needs to watch their
step. You could easily slide down to the next step if you weren't
careful.
High heels? Wet weather? Keep
your mind about yourself.
Beautiful though, right?

Upstairs with sign directing us
After walking up the ancient stairs, this
sign directed us to cross the bridge to find the Bistro and its rooftop patio.

Inside the Bistro
The sun is beginning to set and the lights
have been turned on.
In the center of the photo where the colorful
flags are hanging down, is a look into the courtyard below.
Straight ahead and through the doorway is the
bar, a large selection of boutique beers, and the cashier.

A wide variety of
boutique beers
Here on these shelves you
see a large selection of craft beers from which to choose.
After all, it IS a German
Bistro.
You could return a dozen
times and still not taste all the selections!

Reuben sandwich
It's not easy to find a
Reuben sandwich in Latin America.
The sandwich, made with
fresh German bread, was packed full of corned beef, sauerkraut and cheese,
accompanied by a salad. The sandwich was big and filling enough for Billy and me
to share.
At 95Pesos, it was just under $5USD.

Apple strudel with
vanilla ice cream
We also shared the Iberica
salad and this delicious apple strudel with vanilla ice cream.
This was definitely a
winner as well.

Our bill
The delicious house wine
was $2.50USD each.
Our total before tip came
to just under $23USD.

Varied cold cuts with
breads and dips
On our second visit back to
Berlina, we ordered a cold cut plate that was also outstanding.
It came with 2 glasses of
house wine.
There was that delicious
hearty German bread, Serrano ham, salami, some country style pate and 2
different dips and sauces.
This plate, including the
wine was just under $13USD, and fed two people.

Iberica salad
Here you can see a close up
of the German bread that is served with meals, a very delicious and meaty sort
of bread; chewy with seeds.
We had this Iberica salad
both times we were at the Bistro, and it was remarkable.
Crumbled goat cheese,
cranberries, toasted almonds, Serrano ham, lettuce and thinly sliced apples. The
dressing that accompanied it was a toasted walnut dressing that neither of us
had tried before and it was spectacular.
At 110Pesos, this salad was
under $6USD.

Sacher Torte
We had been wanting to try
the Sacher Torte since our last visit to Oaxaca.
It looks absolutely
delectable, but unfortunately, the cake was a bit dry.
No worries, 9 our of 10
things we tried were upscale, original in flavor, and memorable.

Our bill
Our bill, before tip
totaled under $26USD.
We highly recommend this
Bistro, and, if ever you are
in the city of Oaxaca,
make a stop at Berlina.
