The
Difference between Pain and Suffering
My Intimate Journey with
Cancer Part 15
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

Beauty
among the barrenness
It occurred to me as I have been going
through my health journey, that there is a difference between “pain” and
“suffering.”
It was very useful (and surprising) for me
to realize that, and having done so, to separate the two.
Pain
Pain is rather obvious.
It’s when you stub your toe, hit your thumb
with a hammer or smack your forehead unexpectedly on the corner cabinet door
that was left open. Pain is a big physical OUCH.
Suffering
Suffering, on the other hand, is
complicated.
It’s what we do to ourselves with our
restless minds, asking those unproductive questions over and over until we’ve
dug a mental hole hard to get out of.
We tell ourselves: “What a stupid thing to
do.” “ It’s not good enough” “I’m probably being punished.” “I can’t tell my
spouse about this.” “Why was I overlooked on that promotion?” “Gawd, I just feel
so guilty.”
I mean, name your poison and manner in
which you torture yourself.
That is suffering.
It’s pervasive, and it adds to your pain
because of feeling unworthy or undeserving of a great life. You are not the only
one who does this to themselves. It’s counter-productive and it will rob your
life of wonder and delight.
**Power begins
in the mind, not in the body**
Your Personal Power
If there is any advice I would like to share
on this topic, it would be to detach yourselves from this destructive habit and
find a peace-filled mental place to go.
That might be easier said than done, but it
will train your mind to follow your command. The mental and emotional space to
live your life joyously, without fear and with more energy is your reward.
And let me tell you something.
You DO deserve a great life. You simply
have to decide to create one for yourself.
