Located just 45 minutes from
Morelia,
the State Capital of Michocan, Patzcuaro (POTS-cwah-roh), at 7,020 feet, is
a mixed colonial mountain town with an indigenous feel.
Morelia was founded in
the time of the Spanish Conquest and is now a UNESCO site. It's a very
classy, sophisticated, aristocratic, international city with great food and restaurants.
There are rooftop terraces, nice views, and amazing architecture. Patzcuaro
was founded in the 1320s so it is older, poorer, less flashy and with a more
indigenous presence. It's a quick trip into the past.
Patzcuaro has
successfully blended its indigenous and colonial roots and provides an excellent hub from which to explore the other towns
and villages in the area.
