Los Nietos
Restaurant - Bar - Cafe
Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico
Whatever it is, tequila
probably can't fix it, but it's worth a shot! - Jimmy Buffett
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
On our trip up to the Mexican Highlands area to pursue the tasting of some
of the best
tequilas in the world, one of our stops was
Arandas.
Not far from our hotel
was a small plaza where we listened to an amazing harpist, watched people
walking by, and ate a few meals.
The restaurant we visited the most was
Los Nietos, meaning "The Grandchildren."

Los Nietos Bar and Cafe, right on the
Plaza
Los Nietos is a second floor
establishment. Walking upstairs we noticed that several walls had photos of
patrons attached on a memory board. By the look on the faces of these
people, it was a good guess that Los Nietos was a popular and fun place to
have a meal or enjoy happy hour.

It's a lovely view!
This is Plaza Principal with the Santa
Maria de Guadalupe Church to the left.
One morning we were hearing this amazing
voice and harp wafting through the air, and we asked the waitress if the
music was live or was it piped into the Plaza. She said it was live, and we
could watch the harpist down below if we cared to do so.
We actually did that, and Billy took a
video of this man singing. Check it
out here.

The inside of Los Nietos
In the back, through the door on the left
you can see from ceiling to the floor some of the photographs that are
pinned up on the memory corkboard.
The bar in the center has a variety of
local tequilas on display - typical for this area of Mexico.
The door on the right leads to the
kitchen.
Out of view, the wall to the right of
this photo also had hundreds of photos of people having a great time. The
owner approached us and asked for our photo to be added to this fun
collection and we were happy to pose!

Cheese enchiladas with chipotle sauce
These were just SO. GOOD.
Cheese enchiladas are common in Mexico,
and one of our favorite sauces is one made from the smokey-and-not-too-spicy
chipotle pepper.
This had just enough kick in the flavor
to make it interesting, and the deep reddish-brown pepper made this simple
dish extraordinary.

Cappuccino at Los Nietos
Los Nietos offered several styles of
coffee, cappuccino being one of them. What a great thing to have in the
morning, or in the afternoon for a pick-me-up.
We were not disappointed.
As you know,
we love
coffee.

Chips and salsa
For the most part, tortilla chips and
salsa are made fresh daily.
This salsa is made with roasted tomatoes,
cooked onion, roasted chili (serano or jalapeno, depending) and then whirred
around in a blender. We love it when the salsa is served warm, just off the
grill!

Tequila menu at Los Nietos
Being in tequila country, lt's not
unusual to have a variety of local tequilas available at most restaurants.
A small "copa" (called "cuba" here in
Arandas) runs from $3.50USD to $5USD, depending on the Brand you purchase.
Bottles run from $37USD to $69USD for
Siete Leguas
Blanco. As you know, blancos are not aged at all under most circumstances.
There are no anejos on this list, but you
can have your choice of reposados,
aged in
the barrel for up to 3 years.
If you are in Arandas stop by.
