The
Other Side of the Boat
Billy Kaderli

The Other Side
When all my friends think I
am crazy for moving so fast in this new relationship, I remember something I
learned long ago: when everyone is on the same side of the boat, I go to the
other side.
That is how I retired at 38,
in 1991.
I am not sure why I lean that
way. It is instinct.
It worked out pretty well
then. I have no regrets now.
I have spent a lot of time
turning this over, weighing pluses and minuses. My Thai lady has been doing the
same, on her own, without me in the room.
I am no fool, and neither is
she. She is a responsible business owner and a free spirit. That combination
fits me.
I have never been with anyone
who was not a U.S. citizen. Language, distance, culture—all of it is new. It is
complicated. Other couples have walked this road. Some of them made a life.
No relationship worth keeping
is free of work. This one will not be either.
We are both grown. We have
been through enough to know what we want: a friend, a lover, and a travel
companion to share the years with.
Akaisha’s passing was a
wake-up call. I have said that before. I got to say goodbye to her many times.
Eleven years ago my Thai friend lost her husband and her brother in a car
accident. She never got to say goodbye. I know my own pain. I do not pretend to
know hers.
What I do know is this: we
have found each other with a shared purpose—to use the health we have and the
years we have, together, to a beautiful end.
