Living
in a Fool’s Paradise
Billy Kaderli

YaYa and I have been talking,
planning, and laughing a lot.
The conversations are easy.
Honest. Real.
From the videos and live
streams she sent me from her hair salon, I could see how much that shop means to
her. She has poured herself into it the same way we poured ourselves into our
restaurant.
She has more than 200 regular
customers and a strong business. I respect that. I know what it cost her to
build it.
Then it hit me: I was asking
her to give that up to take a chance with me. I don’t want to live in Thailand.
I want to keep traveling.
I told her I would not make
her choose—the shop she loves, or me. I couldn’t live with that. It wouldn’t be
fair to either of us. I asked her to think hard about it. I told her I would
respect whatever she decided.
Leaving Thailand will be a
huge change for her.

She answered plainly. She had
decided to put the shop up for sale. She wants to be with me. She told me the
price she was asking.
Wow.
I sat with that for about
twenty minutes, did a little math, and wrote her back. I was honored. And I told
her I would buy the shop from her.
I want the title to stay as
it is—in her name, not mine. No transfer games. No taking it from her. I would
pay her asking price, but we need to spend time together before any money moves.
A woman already wants the shop but doesn’t have the money. She can keep it open.
They can share whatever profit there is.
If something happens to me,
or to us, YaYa will have a way back. The shop will still be there. Security. A
safety net. An insurance policy with a front door.
She called soon after and
accepted. There were a lot of tears.
Meanwhile, I’m joking about a
new logo: Billy’s Salon. A beach. A couple of palm trees. A salon chair and a
drink in hand. Ha ha. Not a chance.
Now she calls me her boss.
I love this woman.
