Eating Dinner at the Casa Hidalgo Restaurant

Cuernavaca, Mexico

Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

Mexico has a colorful history, filled with stories of the conquests of native tribes and various revolutions for the people's freedom.

What has this to do with Casa Hidalgo Restaurant?

When the native people of this area of Mexico (the Tenochtitlan) fell, Hernan Cortez began to build a palace in Cuernavaca.

The building of the palace went quickly from 1521 when it began, to when it was finally finished in 1535. Built over the ruins of a native temple, two centuries later this palace became a prison, then the seat of the government of Cuernavaca until 1969.

Restaurante Casa Hidalgo is located in front of this palace with its panoramic view of both the Palace of Cortes and the Zocalo.

Come take a look.

A buttery yellow-colored building, this restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating in a garden atmosphere.

One can choose to dine on the balcony, indoors or down below. In the upper left of this photo you can see the Palacio de Cortez.

The restaurant is filled with marigold flowers, which were sacred to the Aztecs. These indigenous peoples bred them for bigger and bigger blooms. They represent the Sun and the Light that the sun gives off.

Wine by the glass at Casa Hidalgo Restaurant, Cuernavaca, Mexico

Glasses of Chardonnay and Cabernet

We had passed by this restaurant the evening before, and entered in to share some glasses of wine as we looked out the balcony at the Zocalo below.

It was then that we decided to return for a dinner the next night.

In the middle of the table you can see the QR code to be able to look at the menu on your phone.

Fried Calamari and dips as an appetizer, Casa Hidalgo Restaurant, Cuerenavaca, Mexico

Fried Calamari appetizer

We started off our dinner with a shared appetizer of fried calamari with two sauces and lime.

One sauce is green chili, and the other is a chipotle mayonnaise, very popular in Mexico.

Fish of the Day, Casa Hidalgo Restaurant, Cuernavaca, Mexico

Grilled fish of the day

We also shared a main course of grilled Robalo, fish of the day with fresh vegetables.

There is the tiniest bit of raspberry sauce drizzled for color, but neither the fish nor the vegetables had any sauce at all. The  menu described the fish as having olives and white chiles and it was moist, but it was lacking that needed accompaniment of a sauce. The vegetables had no seasoning.

Fresh, yes, but for the reputation that this restaurant carried, we expected something more.

Strudel at Casa Hidalgo Restaurant, Cuernavaca, Mexico

The pear and pineapple strudel that wasn't

Continuing on, we ordered pear and pineapple strudel with ice cream. The strudel was really tasty, but it was apple and raisin!

Menu at Casa Hidalgo Restaurant, Cuernavaca, Mexico

The Menu

Casa Hidalgo Restaurant offers many selections - Salads, soups, appetizers, pastas, main entrees and miscellaneous specialties of the house and of the Chef.

As we mentioned, this restaurant has a good reputation, but for this meal, we were a bit disappointed.
