How to
Choose the Perfect Armchair
Harbord B. Norris
Finding
the perfect seat is something that seems simple but there is a lot more involved
than meets the eye. When you do find it, however, there is nothing quite like
the feeling of knowing that there is unmatched comfort waiting for you whenever
you need it.
Appearance and comfort are important, but that’s just scratching the surface as
to what is needed to find the perfect armchair. If you are in the market for a
new armchair, there are a few basic tips that will take you a long way toward
finding the perfect option.

Know Your Style
When shopping for
premium armchairs in Australia, you won’t get far if you don’t
have an understanding of your style. An important part of
any aspect of
lifestyle is finding that perfect balance between comfort and style. That’s why
knowing what style of armchair you prefer before you get started is so critical.
Are
you looking for something more classic or contemporary? Start by looking around
your space to get an idea of what kind of style would best compliment your
current décor. Perhaps you’re looking for a statement piece or to move in a new
direction. Look at the kind of aesthetic vision you are looking to create and
that will help make further decisions a bit easier.
The Right Size
Another critical aspect of
buying an armchair is finding the right size. There
are far more than you may have realized and there is nothing worse than getting
a chair that doesn’t quite fit into your existing space. Even if it does
physically fit, it may wind up taking up all of your attention and worsening the
impact of other pieces.
Make sure to measure the width, height, and depth of any piece you are
considering and know how those dimensions will fit in your space. Dimensions
will vary, but general guidelines are helpful. Smaller chairs work better for
compact spaces while something larger is more generous with seating. This goes
in lockstep with knowing your style. You can’t get the right chair if you don’t
know what size works best for what you’re trying to do.
Consider Materials
This is another aspect of choosing an armchair that tends to get a bit
overlooked. You may not think it, but the material type is one of the most
important aspects of making a choice. Would leather, performance fabric, Boucle,
Rattan, or Velvet work better for your space?
Each material has its upsides and downsides, so do your homework. Leather is
generally easier to clean but might be susceptible to more wear and tear if you
have pets. Velvet is beautiful but high maintenance. Know what you are getting
into before just choosing an armchair. It may come back to bite you if you don’t
know what you’re dealing with.
Consider the Types
Are
you looking more for a wingback chair or a club chair? What about chairs that
swivel? Perhaps a Bergere armchair? Armchairs don’t all come in one style,
color, size, or material, so why would they be relegated to a single type of
chair?
Each offers a different set of perks compared to the others, especially within a
given space. If you are looking for upper back support, wingback chairs are
great. Swivel chairs are great if you need to change directions, while Bergere
chairs have a classic, timeless look that might not be the most comfortable in
the world. Everyone has a type of chair they prefer whether they are acutely
aware of it or not.
