Seattle is a great city for seniors to live in as it boasts some of the best senior living facilities in America. However, it can be tough to decide which one is right for you or your loved one, especially if you're yet to learn what tips to consider when picking a reliable one. Below, we discuss some effective tips on choosing the best senior living facility for you or your loved ones to settle in after retirement.

Find Out the Level of Care Offered

The first thing you'll want to do is find out the level of care your loved one needs and what the retirement community offers. If you're looking for the best senior living options in Northgate Seattle, finding out the level of care will help you narrow down your options. This is important as not every senior living facility offers the same type of care.

If your loved one only needs minimal assistance with their activities of daily living (ADLs), then an assisted living facility would be a good option. On the other hand, if your loved one needs more comprehensive care, then you'll want to look into nursing homes or continuing care retirement communities.

Check If the Facility Is Accredited

When looking at different senior living facilities, you'll want to make sure that they are accredited. This is a good way to measure the quality of care and services the facility provides.

The two main accreditation organizations for senior living facilities are the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and the Joint Commission International. You can also look for reviews of the facility online. However, keep in mind that not all reviews are accurate, so take them with a grain of salt.

Do a Tour of the Facility

Once you've narrowed down your choices, it's time to do a tour of the facility. This will allow you to see the facility and meet the staff. During your tour, pay attention to how clean and well-maintained the facility is.

Ask the staff questions about their services and see how they respond. If you sense fear and uneasiness among the employees, this can be a bad sign and indicate abuse in the facility.

Ask for Additional Services

If you have specific needs, be sure to ask the facility if they provide those services. Some facilities offer extra care to terminally ill patients so that these patients can stay in the same facility until it's time for them to leave.

For example, if you or your loved one needs physical therapy or memory care, ensure that the facility offers those services. If they don't, then it's probably not the right fit for you.

Get a Feel for the Community

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a senior living facility is the community in the facility. Do you feel like you'll fit in, or will you be the only young person there? Take some time to meet the residents and see if they seem friendly and welcoming. You don't want to remain lonely and isolated in your golden years.

Making a decision about where to live during your golden years is a big decision. But, if you take your time and do your research, you're sure to find the perfect place for you. Start with the above tips for choosing the best senior living option in Seattle and you'll be on your way to a happy and healthy retirement.
