OMG!
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
What do you do
when you are in a foreign country and your computer stops working?
Here you are
traveling, taking photos, communicating through WiFi at your hotel,
posting on Facebook, talking on Skype - when all of a sudden your
digital box goes fritz. After re-booting and trying some fixes, nothing
is helping.
On the water, Lake
Atitlan, Panajachel, Guatemala In my case after
a couple of trips to the computer guys here in Panajachel, Guatemala,
and thinking we had it repaired once, the issue was that the hard drive
crashed. Most times I can mend these things myself and re-install
Windows, but I do not travel with my CD –Rom drive nor with the CD’s
that hold the operating system. So, I was that the mercy of the experts.
Once decided that it was, in fact,
the hard drive (see all costs for labor and parts below) Cristobal, the
shop owner and technician, told me he could get a new one from Guatemala
City by Tuesday.
This was Friday and I
did not want to be without a computer for that long. After all, the world is
coming to an end in a matter of days, so I jumped on a bus to Solola, twenty
minutes away, and purchased a 500 GB Toshiba hard drive for 750Q’s.
By now it was later in
the afternoon and Cristobal told me my computer would be ready around 5:00 PM
the next day.
On Saturday morning I
had a three hour massage to alleviate the stress of all of this while a new
install of my operating system and other software that I requested was
performed. My box was good to go a few hours later than promised, and the
installation cost was 200Q’s. The entire fix was done in 35 hours, and now I am
up and running once again
Pulling out HD and
testing = $16USD
Hard drive costs
= $94.00USD
Technician cost =
$25.00USD
Massage costs =
$31.00USD
