Sobremesa Ice Cream

Antigua, Guatemala

Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

Antigua, Guatemala is about two and one half hours travel distance from Panajachel. Many people go for a day trip, but we thought we would take a few days and go to the "big city" and hang out for a while.

There are a variety of restaurants, cafes, wine bars, an Irish bar, a gorgeous plaza and terrific opportunities for taking photos.

This day, we decided to go for some gourmet ice cream.

Sobremesa's exotic ice creams

Sobremesa's exotic ice creams

In Portuguese, Sobremesa means “dessert,” but in Spanish culture, it has a deeper meaning.

To be in Sobremesa represents the Latin importance of family and friendship. It means that after the main meal of the day, which usually takes place around 2 or 3 pm, the Spanish often linger on at table enjoying dessert, coffee, or liqueurs. They spend time with one another before returning to work later in the afternoon.

More unique flavors listed such as Chocolate Chile Cobanero, Strawberry Merlot, Strawberry Parmesan, and 5x Chocolate!

Sobremesa offers more than 40 exotic homemade ice creams both here at the ice cream store and the restaurant.

Mango Basil Ice Cream

Mango Basil

With all of these selections, it was difficult to choose. I figured I'd be back again to try another flavor sometime, but today I went for the Mango Basil. Light and sweet, both flavors were identifiable. I thought to myself, this combination would make a terrific dressing for a salad with baby lettuces, fruit, walnuts, raisins and goat cheese!

Chocolate and Bacon Ice Cream

Chocolate and Bacon

Yes, there really was bacon in this delicious chocolate ice cream. Once the ice cream melted, then the bacon was there and it was chewy!

No salad dressings came to mind with this combination...!

Chocolate Chip Parmesan Ice Cream

Chocolate Chip Parmesan

I think the favorite of the day was this Chocolate Chip Parmesan. The chips were crunchy and there was the light background flavor of parmesan cheese to savor.

Unique, unusual, memorable, enchanting, a visit to Sobremesa is worth fitting into your visit to Antigua.
