Templo del
Sagrario
Patzcuaro, Michoacan,
Mexico
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
Walking around Central
Patzcuaro is a trip into the past.
There seemed to be churches everywhere,
and we stumbled upon this beautiful old majestic temple founded by
Bishop
Vasco de Quiroga in 1540.
Temple of the Tabernacle
This Temple of Sagrario is one of the
most photographed churches in this ancient town, with its mossy and moldy
arches and cobblestone streets. The mixed-style architecture is beautiful.
This building housed the Sanctuary of Our
Lady of Health until 1924, but it was only a hospital for 4 years between
1536 and 1540 before it was moved.
For one year in the early 1700s, it was
given to the Dominican nuns who used it as their convent.
Inside the arches
The image of the Virgin of health was
made in the indigenous Purechepa manner of corn paste and was kept
here for 191 years. In 1908 it was moved to what is now the Basilica of Our
Lady of Health.
Through the doors where the red car is
parked was a square garden with rooms surrounding it. I imagine that these
were individual quarters, either of the Dominican nuns, the doctors who gave
service at the hospital, the priests, or perhaps for patients of the
hospital.
Bell tower
After having spent time in
Morelia,
where the old buildings and the stately
Cathedral had all been power washed to reveal the natural color of the
pink stone, seeing this moss-covered building was a bit surprising.
It added to the feeling that we were
glimpsing into the past. It was almost like walking through a 3 dimensional
movie or through some ancient Spanish town.
Looking from the street arches into
the courtyard
It's worth visiting this Sagrario for the
photographs you can take.
Inside the Sanctuary
Inside the church itself it seemed more
modern. The walls were brightly painted and clean.
The parquet flooring is from the original
construction, the benches where the faithful sit for Mass are very simple.
Confessionals line the left side of the
photo.
If you get to Patzcuaro, do make a stop
at the Templo. It will be worth your time.
