Life in the
Slow Lane
Billy and Akaisha Kaderli
Road Kill Tire Shop, Belize
Yeah Mon, the name of the shop, "Road Kill
Tire Shop" says it all. Or does it?
Like most things in
Belize, things move
slow. But as you can see, these guys are at the ready for whatever tire
problem comes their way. I am sure they would "get right on it" if someone
pulled up with a bum tire. Then again, it may take them a full three minutes
just to get off their duff. That's Life in The Tropics, Mon, Life in the
Slow Lane.
When we
left
the working world, we landed ourselves on the tiny island nation of Nevis, West Indies.
It was there that we experienced this very slow lifestyle pace daily. It
helped us break out of our over-the-top-stress way of life that we were
buried in. Once
in a upscale restaurant on this island of Nevis, we ordered two hamburgers. They made one
full hamburger order, delivered
it, then proceeded to begin to make the other. One at a time was all they
could handle.
We adapted.
For us, this experience
of island life, although frustrating at times, made us slow down and
cherish the journey as compared to the destination. After all, while waiting for
those hamburgers to arrive we were sitting on Pinney's Beach, one of the
most beautiful beaches in the world.
Billy Swingin' on Pinney's Beach
Over the years we have learned the value
of slowing down and taking the time to
smell the roses. We had already lived
the stress-filled life, working 80 hour weeks. We learned that, while
sometimes it was exciting - even dazzling - we were quickly moving out of
our thirties and we wanted something more ease-filled for our futures.
Now we wander through the sois of
Thailand, and the
callejons of
Latin America eating
street food and chatting
with the locals and
indigenous. We get to experience the differences in
cultures and learn phrases of the language of the country in which we are
staying. The pace has slowed down - not as much as the Road Kill Tire Shop
in Belize or the take-two-hours-to-receive-your-hamburger style of Nevis, West
Indies, but it's a comfortable, balanced lifestyle. A few hours for lunch is
not unusual for us now.
When we were working it was difficult to
fit in quality time for
family and friends, and now we have
month-long visits to the States, and friends around the world. We traded in our
briefcases for backpacks and haven't looked back.
How about you? Are you living the
retirement lifestyle of your dreams?
