Here we are, well into our 34th year of financial independence,
and according to the pundits it wasn’t suppose to be this way. We were
supposed to run out of money, the 4% rule doesn’t work, and we would be
bored.
Yet, we’re still going strong.
What do we know that they don’t?
First, it seems they believe that once you stop working so does your
money.
Wrong!
Your money will continue to be invested, hopefully growing at a rate
outpacing inflation and your spending. Ours has.
Second, the 4% rule is flawed. It might not work for you if you adhere to it
in its strictest form. But people have common sense and if the market tanks
50% like it did in 2007 – 2008 then people make adjustments. Geographical
arbitrage is one way of reducing expenses and increasing lifestyle. This is
what we have done and it stretches our portfolio.
Bored? Really? We wake up in the morning with nothing to do and by
the end of the day we only have half of it done. Boredom has never been an
issue with us and we are very much at peace with tranquil surroundings.
Perhaps it is time to look at your life from a different perspective and
create opportunities that will move you into the future you want.
