Chac Mool
Restaurant/Bar/Cafe
Chacala, Nayarit, Mexico

Currency Exchange
It was our first visit to
Chacala beach in the Mexican state of Nayarit.
What a pleasant place! A tiny fishing village of only about 300 inhabitants,
Chacala swells to about a thousand during High Season.
A favorite Restaurant/bar/cafe in the
area is Chac Mool.
The Pre-Columbian MesoAmerican
sculpture in the center called Chac Mool
All throughout this area of
Mexico and
Central America, you will find references to a sculpture of a warrior lying
on his back with his head turned at 90 degrees from his body. On his belly
is usually a plate or offering bowl in which gifts were given to the gods.
This particular restaurant/bar/cafe was a
favorite of
Canadian and American Tourists and this establishment must have
had an agreement with hotels up and down this coastal area. Daily, groups of
Gringo visitors would come through this restaurant (which led to the beach
in the back) and plant themselves down for the day.
Large tables, beach chairs and umbrellas
were all set up, and with Chac Mool's menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner,
plus gourmet coffees, wine by the glass, boutique Margaritas, umbrella
drinks and Mexican
beer, the day would easily slip by.
Our cappuccino and papaya smoothie
We got there early one morning before the
crowds took over and it was very peaceful. While there might have been other
places that offered fruit smoothies and specialty coffee drinks, we did not
find them on this visit.
We had
a fine table right at the beach and the view was completely unobstructed...
until...
Beach tables and umbrellas for rent
Tables and umbrellas are for rent at
various shops and whole families set up down by the water line.
Chacala is only about 3
hours from Guadalajara, and we met several people who were from that city.
What a great place to spend time with your loved ones!
The little girl in the pink bathing suit
on the left is already digging her hole in the sand and bringing water from
the ocean to that hole to make a sand castle.
Making sand castles was
a big deal on this beach, or burying a brother or sister under the sand, and
making sand sculptures of turtles or fish.
But the biggest attraction was making
holes. Big holes, little holes, wide holes and narrow holes.
I wondered... were they trying to dig
their way to China? Were they looking for buried treasure?
Little boys would run across the beach
and dive into the holes and look very satisfied with themselves. They'd get
out of the hole, set themselves up another time, run full-force towards the
hole and dive in once again.
It seemed they never tired of this game.
Chac Mool's coffee and Margarita menu
You could find just about anything you
wanted on this drink menu - gourmet coffee, tropical beach drinks or
Margaritas. Mexican hot chocolate is famous, and Chai Lattes are simply
delicious.
If you would like a
Jalapeno Margarita, Strawberry Daiquiri or a craft beer...this is the place!
At the current Peso-to-Dollar Exchange,
Daiquiris are about $5USD, Margaritas just over $4USD, and a double
Cappuccino is about $2.50USD.
Billy and Akaisha at Chacala beach
Here we are, living the simple life.
Boats in the cove, sunny weather, sweet, calm waves.
Seafood in the
restaurants!!
Pacifico at the beach!
Watching the waves rhythmically roll in
as the sun passes through the sky...
It's an easy, leisurely life.
Chac Mool has a wide area of palapas in
the back end of the restaurant. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy your toes
in the sand shaded from the direct sun.
Chacala is a great place to get your
Vitamin Sea and D.
Calamari rings with tartar sauce and
Italian dipping sauce
These were delicious calamari rings for
under $5USD.
Fresh, perfectly crisped with tasty sauces.
It was a super accompaniment for watching
the sunset just steps from the ocean.
Our bill
Notice that there are two totals on our
bill. The 182 Pesos are for the calamari and the Pacifico beer.
Then you will see that the tip is
optional, and the second total of 206 Pesos will include that tip.
We want to caution you to examine your
restaurant bills as some restaurants will include the tip, others will say
the tip is optional and include that figure. Still others will only give a
total, but no tip is included.
You must check with the server so that
you don't mistakenly tip on the figure that already includes the tip,
as this is an easy mistake to make.
Just a side note, in our piece on the
tourist beach of
Yelapa, we mentioned the prices there were off the charts. Beers were 45
Pesos each, for instance. Chac Mool is the most expensive restaurant at
Chacala Beach, and the beers here were 23 Pesos each.
There are plenty of tourists visiting
Chacala, but the businesses found no need to double their beer and food
prices to make a living.
This could be YOU!
Chacala awaits your arrival. It's a peaceful,
simple and CLEAN place, family friendly and affordable. Chacala has won the Clean Beach Award two years in a row
and it shows.
Whether it's breakfast lunch or dinner,
Chac Mool is a pleasant place to pass a meal and enjoy the view.
