Berlina Bistro

Oaxaca, Mexico

Billy and Akaisha Kaderli

The city and state of Oaxaca are known for delicious and varied cuisine. The city itself is cultured, so you can find everything from locally made moles (MOH-lays) to Italian, Chinese and even German food!

Berlina

Berlina

Berlina is a German style bistro that also serves specialty breakfasts.

It is located on the walking street Andador de Macedonia Alcala, across the street from the Santo Domingo Cathedral.*Berlina has since moved, see new address below. Unpretentious surroundings and a cozy feel greet you upon entering the bistro. And one of the owners, who is a double for Antonio Banderas, is a charming and attentive waiter.

Here in the cases you see a large selection of boutique beers from which to choose as well as some freshly made desserts including sachertorte and apple strudel. You can take a sneak peek at the owner who is standing with his back to us by the computer from which a personal collection of music is being played.

The menu offers delectables such as cold meat and cheese plates, German pastries, salads, sandwiches, brochettes, and soups.

Reuben sandwich

Reuben sandwich

It's not easy to find a Reuben sandwich in Latin America. When we first saw this on the menu, that's when we decided to try Berlina's for lunch.

The sandwich, made with fresh German bread, was packed full of corned beef, sauerkraut and cheese, accompanied by a salad. The sandwich was big and filling enough for me to take half of it home. At a cost of 90Pesos, just under $5USD, it was a deal.

Grilled vegetable salad with serrano ham

Here you can see a close up of the German bread that is served with meals, a very delicious and meaty sort of bread; chewy with seeds. Since we ate here several times, I ordered a grilled vegetable salad with jamon serrano, which is a dried ham made in the mountains, sliced paper thin and very flavorful.

What a great salad! Price was also 90Pesos, just under $5USD.

It really does look great, doesn't it? Fire cooked red and gold peppers, eggplant, carrots and zucchini along with fresh tomatoes, serrano ham, lettuce and sesame seeds.

The dressing was delightful and went well with the taste of the vegetables, not drowning out the flavor of the fire.

Bratwurst plate

Billy ordered a bratwurst plate which came with potato salad, that awesome German bread, a simple side salad, three different styles of mustards and included a boutique beer.

It's hard to find mustards in Mexico, as they are not used in Mexican cuisine. This being a German bistro, we were thrilled to see the variety of mustards given with this meal.

Price was 135Pesos which came to $7.25USD.

What a plate! What a deal!

After all these good lunches, we wanted to return for happy hour and try their cold meat and cheese plate which included 2 glasses of wine. Unfortunately, the evening we chose was a holiday evening, and Berlina was closed. I'd like to try their strudel or sachertorte sometime too!

Certainly, if ever you are in the city of Oaxaca, make a stop at Berlina Bistro.
