Frozen desserts have been around for centuries, but gelato, as we know it today, didn't take off until the 16th century.

Gelato is like an ice cream but with less fat and is served at a slightly warmer temperature, so the flavors come out more boldly.

Offered all over the world, Italian gelato is considered to be the best.

We are in Sicily, and Sicilians love their gelato as well.

Coffee and gelato go well together sort of like the bitter with the sweet.

An affogato is a dessert made with vanilla ice cream and espresso. Originally invented in Italy, the word “affogato” literally translates as “drowned” in English. This is fitting, as the affogato is no more than a scoop of ice cream “drowned” in espresso.

A freddo is one or two shots of espresso shaken in a mixer and served over ice.

A ristretto is a "short shot" of a more highly concentrated espresso coffee. It is made with the same amount of ground coffee, but it is a finer grind and uses half as much water.

Some flavors of gelato listed are mint, berry, chocolate chip, lemon, and nut. Fior di latte is gelato in its purest form: no eggs, no fruit, no chocolate, no vanilla.

Gianduja is an Italian chocolate paste made from hazelnuts, sugar, and cocoa.

It's lighter than dark chocolate but darker than milk chocolate, and contains at least 30% hazelnuts. In the US, Gianduja is most commonly recognized as a chocolate spread, like Nutella.

Melon gelato

This is cantaloupe gelato. It's like taking a bite out of a fresh melon!

A little sweeter, a little colder, a little more intense.

Very refreshing.

Here we have wines, liquors, pastries and a pasta decoration!

In the back against the wall is the espresso machine.

What's not to love?

More styles of gelato in the case, Palermo, Sicily

More gelatos!

Strawberry, mandarin, melon, coconut, nut, hazelnut, pistachio, chocolate...

The flavors run the gamut.

If you visit Sicily, you must try their gelato and have an espresso on the side.

It's such a southern Italian treat, and you won't be disappointed.
