Currency Exchange
On our most recent visit to
the Colonial City of Guanajuato, Mexico, we were on a mission.
Our goal was to visit as
many of the rooftop bars and restaurants listed in this fine city that we could
But there was an unexpected bump in this road.
Due to Covid, a lot of
these busy, fun, and exciting places had been closed.
So we switched gears, and
concentrated on having 2 hour lunches in avant-garde restaurants instead.
Mestizo Restaurant Logo
Mestizo Restaurant offers
modern Mexican and International selections on their menu.
Not only that, but it's
rated in the top 10 Restaurants in Guanajuato City.
We were looking forward to
this!
Entrance to Mestizo Restaurant
Since so many places we had
planned on going to had been closed, we began the habit of going and finding our
chosen restaurant the day before.
This is the entrance to
Mestizo Restaurant, and we verified that three of us were coming for lunch.
Reservations made!
"Mestizo" means a mix of
races, usually between European and the Indigenous Natives. This word in the
local culture is used to emphasize the positive unity of race mixtures - hence,
the proud name of this restaurant.
Since Mestizo offers a
style of artistic fusion cuisine, we were curious as to what our choices might
be.
The dining room
We entered the dining room and saw the
beautiful pottery plates displayed on the walls.
Various art pieces were also hung and the
whole place was lovely.
It had an open, yet cozy feel.
The menu
The menu offered everything from filet
mignon, salmon, chicken in mole to grilled octopus.
When the waiter came to the table to mention
the specials, our ears picked up:
Pork Chop in White Mole Sauce.
What?!
We've had plenty of moles in our travels, but
we had never experienced white mole before...
All three of us were curious and ordered this
special.
Pork chop with white mole sauce
Moles are famous in Mexico
with several towns claiming that they have the best!
Made with dozens of
ingredients, Moles are time-consuming to prepare.
White mole is made with
nuts, white chocolate, white pepper and other "secret" elements for flavor and
texture.
This dish was outstanding
and certainly memorable. It came with roasted potatoes and the boys loved that
idea. Personally, I would have liked the choice of roasted vegetables or a
salad.
Apple tart
After our main course,
Billy and I shared an apple tart.
While this dessert is
creatively presented, complete with spun sugar as a decoration, the flavor and
texture was just so-so.
That being said, our meal
was spectacular and we loved the ambiance and good service.
Friendly kitchen staff saying hello!
Billy knows his way around a kitchen, and
he's not shy to come into one and check it out.
Asking for a smile from the kitchen staff,
they were happy to share a hello with you!
Our bill for three people
Our bill for the three of us before tip came
to 1,590Pesos (about $78USD).
Our bill (for just Billy and me) came to 1200Pesos
(about $59USD).
Would we return?
Absolutely!
